Throughout human history one has seen horrible atrocities and insightful tragedies, one has seen determined, figures of hope and brutal ends. Somehow, mankind has continuously found a way to mess up time and time again, to slaughter its own kind, to discriminate against a slight difference, to determine one's life without repercussions. Yet, despite all these unjust mistakes humanity has evoked, in the roughest of times humanity has always banded together to eradicate the wrong. With time there is prevailance, a joined society, forgiving the death and injustice that once torn it apart. We accept and learn from the mistakes of the past in order to move forward. Although Gatsby one of the main characters doesn’t necessarily have the correct intentions when chasing down Daisy’s heart, his perseverance says otherwise. Throughout the story there is a recurring symbol of a green light across the bay. The green light that Gatsby sees is perceived to him as an embodiment of Daisy, a girl whom he has been in love with since he was a young man. Gatsby always stares at this light because it's his connection to Daisy“‘If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay,’ said Gatsby. ‘You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.’ Daisy put her arm through his abruptly, but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever’”(121). With Gatsby’s obsession with the green light, it can be seen that he refuses to let his past mistakes with Daisy happen again. With all the time that he had been without Daisy, and the pain he endured without her, Gatsby was not willing to give her up again. He was ambitious and resilient in getting her back. Unfortunately, in the end, the pain and accusations that Gatsby takes for Daisy is too much after Daisy chooses her husband, Tom, over him. If one grows up believing one will amount to nothing, it will be believed for the entirety of that life. As shown in these books, humanity messes up, they make mistakes. Whether it is from the lack of knowledge or pure evil, large or small, people make mistakes. But, in spite of all differences, ultimately humanity bands together and finds the bravery and right reasons to make things better. Humanity when the going gets tough rids the evil that plagues our world. If the world did not have courageous people who lead a path to the right and safety we would not be where we are today. The self beliefs that we pride ourselves in are only as strong as the measures we take to make them a reality for ourselves. As humans, we fight for what we believe to be right, even if it isn't the ‘popular’ opinion. The resilience and need to live follow those who pursue a life of bravery, the need to be with one another, to protect one another, and to hold those dearest to you close. Human nature is a strange aspect, but somehow it infects all of us with its need to create
