C:Claim: There are many criminal charged cases of kidnapping a year, so how do these bride kidnappings differ from such a shocking event. EE:Establishing Evidence: Kidnapping alone is already against the law and actually so is bride kidnapping. E:Evidence: There are already laws in Kyrgyzstan that quite clearly state the fact that bride kidnappings or the kidnappings of women into marriage is illegal but that does little to nothing from helping the women or stopping the men(Chung). A:Analysis: If there are already laws that make the kidnappings illegal, why does it still happen? EE:Establishing Evidence: Everyone understands that this is a tradition that has been taking place for a very long time, but not everyone gets a good feeling when they hear that their daughter, granddaughter, niece, or whatever the connection is, has been taken from them. In order to accept what has been done, it is up to the groom’s male relatives to break the news to the bride’s family. E:Evidence: In the video presented by Vice, Thomas Morton explains to viewers that “once the bride says yes, the groom’s family will go over to the bride’s house and men bring many gifts in order to smooth things over.”(Bride Kidnapping) Besides just bringing gifts, “The groom’s family will do whatever the bride’s family asks because they are guilty of being thieves.”(Bride Kidnapping) A:Analysis: The people who helped conduct the kidnapping even know that what they did was wrong because they are going over to the house of the bride, bringing gifts and sheep out of remorse. They know that they are taking away someone else’s joy, so they must make up for it with materialistic items in exchange for an irreplaceable one. EE:Establishing Evidence: Though there are times when a family member of the bride will express how sad they feel that she has been taken, they let her go because of the label of it being a tradition. E:Evidence: In the video with Thomas morton, the grandmother of the young girl who was kidnapped expressed how sad it made her that she was taken but she couldn’t do anything and had to let it go because it was part of tradition and you can’t change that. She also mentioned how it made her sad that the young girl was kidnapped before she could even finish school(Bride Kidnapping). Children that are raised by very rich families were often the ones that are kidnapped, or "taken" because the parents could provide more ransom money. For this reason, all rich children would move in highly secured neighborhoods, and hire butlers that doubled as security guards. She follows all of her training and does exactly what she is told to do by her kidnappers. There are several kidnappers who are named Dr. Reyes, Dr. Lanyon, and another person who does not reveal himself until later in the book. Naturally, the reader is very angry at the kidnappers for doing such a horrible thing to a child. The author then takes the story to a place in which no one ever expected him to. Edward Bloor attempts to make the reader empathize with the antagonists. The ways in which he does this are very interesting. He uses three particular methods to achieve the goal of causing the reader to empathize with the "bad guys". These methods include having the antagonists reveal themselves as someone else, having the antagonists tell about all of the hardships that they have endured, and having the antagonists explain why they did something evil (such as kidnapping).
