The year of 2012 marked the completion of Frank Gehry’s very first residential project in Asia, the Opus Hong Kong. Coming from a Pritzker prize-winning architect, this residential complex cannot be labeled as just another building. Frank Gehry engraved his distinctive and whimsical style on the building, making it beautifully unique. However, the appeal of this building does not stop on its exterior. Serving its purpose as a residential unit, the building was meticulously designed to fit into the cultural aspect of the potential residents.
As the most expensive housing in Hong Kong, Opus is equipped with the utmost grandeur facilities. With only one apartment per floor, the space gives a sense of privacy and solitude to the owners. Complemented by floor to ceiling windows facing the metropolitan view, and the terraces designed to accessorize the harbor view (made to look like ship docks), the place is awarded with supreme luxury that ideally counterparts the hedonistic lifestyle of the natives.
Furthermore, the location of the Opus is especially favorable. Positioned on top of the mountain where there is nothing else can be built around it, the Opus secured the best of panoramic view, overlooking the skyscrapers surrounded by the lush green of the hills. That very spot has become the inspiration of the bespoke residential complex.
Under such circumstances, Frank Gehry took reference of the twentieth century art nouveau style to incorporate the natural essence into his design so that it blends with the natural environment of the surrounding. With a lot of inspiration from the nature, the exquisite façade was designed to mimic the nature. The glass-encased columns were designed to look like a swaying bamboo and the curved floor w...

Gehry draws his inspiration from famous paintings such as the Madonna and Child which he qualifies as a “strategy for architecture” (Friedman M. , 2003, p. 42) and which he used as an inspiration for a project in Mexico . Through his interpretation of the paintings and artwork, Gehry looked for a new kind of architecture. His search for a new type of architecture culminated in 1978 with his own house in Santa Monica. What was once a traditional Californian house would be redesigned to become one of the most important and revolutionary designs of the 20th century, giving Gehry international prestige and fame. Frank Gehry’s “Own House” uses a mixture of corrugated metal, plywood, chain link and asphalt to construct a new envelope for an existing typical Californian house. This house has been inspired by Joseph Cornell, Ed Moses and Bob Rauschenberg. Gehry comments on his house by saying that there was something “magical” (Friedman M. , 2003, p. 54) about it. He admits having “followed the end of his [my] nose” (Friedman M. , 2003, p. 54) when it came to constructing the “new” house, which led Arthur Drexler, former Director...

Abstract: New forms in current world have been testimony to the contemporary style of postmodern architecture and are the strength of today’s generation for creating significant architectural standards. Post modernism has blurred the borders between contemporary and traditional construction classical concepts and simply in the field of art and literature. The architectural elements like domes, arches, and classical shapes have lost their identity but the post modernism tries to bridge between these historical forms and contemporary styles. The related architects not only struggled to achieve the image for the buildings but also rejected oversimplified diagrams for living. The post modernism here tries to achieve theoretical base for their designs that creates the excitement in the design program.
The Seagram building is the prime example of Mies' masterful use of steel. The bronze sheathed skyscraper soars thirty-eight stories high from its 90-foot deep pink granite plaza. Volume is everywhere apparent in this building, from the great columns that bring the structure to the ground to the welded bronze mullions holding the glass sheets in place. As enormous of a project this was, great attention was paid to purity and precision of design, following the fundamentals of the style. Details from doorknobs to stainless steel furniture throughout the building, spacious layout and functional use of all elements from interior office space to shower rooms, the Picasso backdrop signaling the entrance, the cantilevered portico entrance, and the luminous ceiling, make this one of the worlds most elegant skyscrapers. More importantly, pertaining to the International Style, Mies has expressed his elegant use of materials, and technological perfection throughout the building.
Located in Santa Monica, United States, Gehry Residence is considered as among the classic California iconic deconstructivist architectural works by the reason of its extraordinary form. Directly designed and renovated by the owner of the house during 1977 until 1978, Frank Gehry tried to explore his creativity on the use of material by wrapping outside of the house with a new exterior while still retaining the previous exterior design exist inside (1979,73). Consist of two floors; those existing house plans were designed in the linear form without any particular organization around it. However, Gehry’s effort in transforming the exterior part has considered succeed to change the impression towards the house.
In order to create innovative public architecture, considered to be the most civic, costly, time intensive and physical of the arts, the project holds a degree of risk, strife, and negotiation . Overcoming these tasks and creating worthy public architecture is a challenge designers try to accomplish, but are rarely successful. The people involved in a potential public building, can be larger than the building itself. Public architecture tries to please all, even the doubters and critics, but because of the all these factors, a building is closer to failing than succeeding.
People are made of complexities and contradictions. Venturi recognized that buildings should be complex and complicated, too. He theorized and built buildings inspired by this principle, and succeeded because of his emphasis on individual experience and the interaction between humanity and architectural forms. In pursuit of this goal, his pluralist and revolutionary style of architecture embraced difference and ambiguity and rejected the rigid rules of modernism. While undoubtedly influenced by Venturi’s ideas, later postmodern architects failed to live up to his principles by forming their own inflexible rules and not concentrating on the human experience with buildings.
Ieoh Ming Pei is one of the greatest architects today. He has contributed to the architectural community extensively and has been recognized for this great work. He has worked in several different countries and created more than 70 buildings, that all continue to challenge him as an architect. No other architect has accomplished so much and for such a great length of time, which is why Pei received the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, a lifetime achievement award that recognizes his accomplishments in the field of architecture. Pei also received the Pritzker Prize, which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture in 1983. He was a part of a generation of architects that brought the world some of the most amazing architectural forms and designs that helped shape modernism into what it has become today.
The essence of modern architecture lays in a remarkable strives to reconcile the core principles of architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. However, it took “the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification, to establish modernism as a distinctive architectural movement” (Robinson and Foell). Although, the narrower concept of modernism in architecture is broadly characterized by simplification of form and subtraction of ornament from the structure and theme of the building, meaning that the result of design should derive directly from its purpose; the visual expression of the structure, particularly the visual importance of the horizontal and vertical lines typical for the International Style modernism, the use of industrially-produced materials and adaptation of the machine aesthetic, as well as the truth to materials concept, meaning that the true nat...
In the process of development of human society, architecture and culture are inseparable. Cuthbert (1985) indicates that architecture, with its unique art form, expresses the level of human culture in different historical stages, as well as the yearning towards the future. According to his article, it can be said that architecture has become one of the physical means for human to change the world and to conquer the nature. Consequently, architecture has been an important component of human civilization. Since 1980s when China started the opening and reforming policy, a variety of architectural ideas, schools and styles have sprung up. Accompanying with a momentum of...

The 101 story building, 500 meters high Taipei 101 is located in Taipei, Taiwan. Taipei 101 is the pride and identity of the people of Taiwan. The building represents “concept of striving for beyond perfection” (Taipei 101 anon 2005) as it outsmarts nature with its technological features. 101 building achieved a remarkable world record for the highest building in 2004 with 101 floors hence the name Taipei 101. Designing and building the 101 building was very challenging and rewarding, as it is located in one of the most hostile places in the world. The tall building is located in Taiwan, which is constantly under attack by Mother Nature, earthquake potential and typhoon winds are just common problem which the architect, C. Y. Lee & Partners, and the structural engineers Thornton Tomasetti Inc needed to solve. The engineers of the Taipei 101 made the impossible possible (Shieh et al n.d). The initial plan was to make three building with 60 storeys building in centre, but the 60 building soon turned into 101 storey single tower building to meet investor’s demand. In order to be the most unique skyscraper in the world Taipei 101 building represents its culture (Taipei 101 Binder, 2008).
