To My Dearest Lucasia
When readers reflect on the poetry of the seventeenth century, poets such as John Donne and the
Metaphysicals, Jonson and the Cavaliers, and John Milton often come to mind. The poetry crosses over
various boundaries of Neoplatonic, Ovidian, and Petrarchan forms, for example, often with many
references to women filling the lines. Described as helpless creatures, seventeenth century women were
often shut out from all possibilities of power, and they were generalized into four categories: virgins,
women to be married, married, and widowed. In the state of marriage, women were forced to be the
submissive, powerless objects of their husbands. Equality and balance within their marriages were of no
concern to men of the seventeenth century. Out of the oppressive setting of the seventeenth century
arose very few women poets; however, Katherine Philips not only became a poet, but she also displayed
her will to survive by responding to the negativity that surrounded the lives of females, especially the
oppression of women in marriages. By focusing on the importance of friendships between women
Philips used her poetry, specifically "Friendship's Mystery: To My Dearest Lucasia," as an outlet to
critique the misogyny and misrepresentations of marriages put forth by male poets, such as John Donne,
and the oppressive social settings of the seventeenth century.

In the eighteenth century, the process of choosing a husband and marrying was not always beneficial to the woman. A myriad of factors prevented women from marrying a man that she herself loved. Additionally, the men that women in the eighteenth century did end up with certainly had the potential to be abusive. The attitudes of Charlotte Lennox and Anna Williams toward women’s desire for male companionship, as well as the politics of sexuality, are very different. Although both Charlotte Lennox and Anna Williams express a desire for men in their poetry, Charlotte Lennox views the implications of this desire differently than Anna Williams.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) owes its creation to many significant events in aviation history. One of them includes the creation of the Air Mail Act of 1925, which spearheaded the creation of commercial airlines that worked for a profit. (FAA, 2011) This act leads to rapid growth in the development of aircraft and of air traffic. “Every moment is enormous, and it is all we have” (Goldberg xii). Natalie Goldberg offers her readers the opportunity to recognize the delicate nature of life and the importance of slowing down one’s life. In her autobiography, Long Quiet Highway: Waking Up in America, she invites readers to journey along her path to awakening in an effort as an author to “pass on her breath” (22). By capturing her message and holding it close to one’s heart, the reader grasps the essence of Goldberg’s message. It becomes clear that awakening can take on many forms and can be reached by different roads, but it is all centered on one goal: to go within oneself and find inner peace and understanding. Through her exploration of America, teaching, spirituality, impermanence, and writing, and through her writing style and language, Goldberg sends her readers along their own long, quiet highway.

After World War II there was an excess of aircraft and trained pilots in the United States, which significantly increase in private and commercial flights. An increase in the use of private aircraft and large passenger planes meant an increase in the possibly of aircraft safety incidents. Even though safety measures had been put in place to tend to large number of aircraft in the skies, in late 1950’s there were two unfortunate accidents that finally led to legislation that would be a major change to the world of aviation that affects us even today. The introduction of the Federal Aviation Act of 1958 spurred several changes in aviation that eventually led to the creation of the Federal Aviation Administration.
With the creation of this new branch of the federal government came many new rules and regulations regarding every aspect of the aviation industry. One of the first acts this branch passed was an act to establish the first air traffic control centers in the United States. These centers were intended to give air traffic control while planes are in the air going to their destination. In these centers people monitored the planes positions, and used telephones to talk with the pilots, and other important airport officials. Throughout history, African Americans have encountered an overwhelming amount of obstacles for justice and equality. You can see instances of these obstacles especially during the 1800’s where there were various forms of segregation and racism such as the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan terrorism, Jim- Crow laws, voting restrictions. These negative forces asserted by societal racism were present both pre and post slavery. Although blacks were often seen as being a core foundation for the creation of society and what it is today, they never were given credit for their work although forced. This was due to the various laws and social morals that were sustained for over 100 years throughout the United States. However, what the world didn’t know was that African Americans were a strong ethnic group and these oppressions and suffrage enabled African Americans for greatness. It forced African Americans to constantly have to explore alternative routes of intellectuality, autonomy and other opportunities to achieve the “American Dream” especially after the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed after the Civil War.

The act was passed due to the fact that President Calvin Coolidge appointed a team of investigators to look into the aviation business. The metaphysical era in poetry started in the 17th century when a number of poets extended the content of their poems to a more elaborate one which investigated the principles of nature and thought. John Donne was part of this literary movement and he explored the themes of love, death, and religion to such an extent, that he instilled his own beliefs and theories into his poems. His earlier works, such as The Flea and The Sunne Rising, exhibit his sexist views of women as he wrote more about the physical pleasures of being in a relationship with women. However, John Donne displays maturity and adulthood in his later works, The Canonization and A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning, in which his attitude transcends to a more grown up one. The content of his earlier works focused on pursuing women for his sexual desires, which contrasts heavily with his latter work. John Donne’s desire for physical pleasure subsides and he seeks to gain an emotional bond with women, as expressed in his later poetry.
In both ‘The Sun Rising’ and ‘The Good Morrow’ Donne presents the experience of love, in a typical Metaphysical style, to engage his reader through sharing his own experiences. These poems show distinctive characteristics of Metaphysical poems which involve colloquial diction, drawing inventive imagery from unconventional sources, passionately analysing relationships and examining feelings. Donne presents the experience of love through conceits, Metaphysical wit, language techniques and imagery, in a confident tone using logical argument. The impact of Donne’s use of direct and idiomatic language shows the reader how he feels about a woman and ultimately love.
In the essay “When We Dead Awaken” Rich makes an interesting point when she says “It’s exhilarating to be alive in a time of awakening consciousness; it can also be confusing, disorienting and painful” (Bartholomae & Petrosky 522). Rich shows us the triumph of our consciousness being exposed to a new revelation and at the same time gives us a reality of the turmoil this awakening might bring.
