When he gets home, his thoughts and hopes vanish, when his mom says she won't keep him. The brother brings the boy and the cat to the vet, and he puts the cat out in a pretzel can, using gas.The boy hates what happened, and he doesn't speak to his family for the rest of the night. The boy wants to keep the cat he found in the woods, but his mom doesn't think it's healthy enough. “I can feel the tears welling up. ‘But that kitten is still mine.’ I say. ‘I found that kitten and it's going to be mine.’” (40) The boy is very sad, because his mom wants him to get rid of the cat, but he loves it very much. The boy is very passionate about it, and he wants the justice he deserves, to keep it. This shows the theme of injustice because the older brother could have not killed the cat, but he did and made his brother suffer. Another example, is the older brother feels like he has to make the boy become a man, and that is not right if the boy doesn't want to. “‘You do have a choice!’ is all I say. I hug the box for dear life, and move to the door, but Paul moves faster. ‘Come on now,’ he says gently talking hold of my arm. ‘ Be a man.’ he says. ‘ I'm not a man’ I tell him. ‘I don't want to be one.’” (43) The brother doesn't understand how the boy feels towards the cat, so he feels that the boy should just give up, but they boy doesn't want to. In the beginning of the story, his older brother stuck a whole roll of tape on his head. “So he looked over my shoulder at the signatures, went into the bathroom for a few seconds, came out, went to his own desk, unraveled a whole roll of scotch tape and stuck it on my head.” (1) This is unjust because the boy doesn't want to play with the older brother, so he gets mad. Instead of just going out to play, he took his anger out on his brother, and made him suffer by putting a whole roll of scotch tape on his head. The characters actions show that the theme of justice is developed. Later in the story, we see another example of characters actions showing justice. When the younger brother goes to tell on the older one, the dad gets mad at him for screaming for no reason, and making a big deal. “‘You don't!’ Whap! ‘Ever..’ Whap! ‘Come in!’ Whap! ‘Here!’ Whap! ‘Without knocking! Do you hear me?’ Silence. Whap! ‘Do you hear me?’” (3) This shows justice because the boy is trying to tell on his brother for doing something wrong, but instead he gets in trouble, and the brother doesn't. This is unjust, because the dad overreacted about the boy not knocking, but he didn't care about the tape on his head. These two characters actions show the theme of justice because they are doing the opposite of what the little boy deserved to
