From the first moment that a person holds their child for the first time so begins their unwavering duty be a good parent. The journey into parenting is a winding road, at times it is the scariest most confusing experience of a lifetime while being the most rewarding one at the very same time. It does not take much effort to be a good parent just a never-ending supply of love and Band-Aids. Parenting is a tough job and not everyone does a good job. It requires patience, understanding, and compassion. As well as guidance, freedom, and discipline for good measure. The mother in “Everyday Use” was just that, a good mother.
First of all, as the story began we met Maggie, a shy girl who lived her life in the darkness of her sister Dee’s shadow. Their mother was hardworking and spent her days on the farm working to offer a better life for her daughters. Raising children alone is a backbreaking task. Although they lived a modest life her children never went without. She gave them a home and food to eat, everything from killing hogs to breaking ice was done for her children. Even though Dee spent her life being difficult and she was never satisfied until she got what she wanted. When she wanted to go away to school her mother supported her. Even though their relationship came across as strained she always wanted the best for her daughter. She longed for a close to Dee like she was Maggie. When Dee came home after being gone she wanted to take all the items from her mother’s house like they were pieces for a museum.
