People who are different and ready for a change can be scary,society is one of the first people scared. Society pushes away people who are different from the norms. This happened in a time overlooked by many people. This was the time the young lords spent in New york. Kids and teenagers banded together to make as much as a difference as possible. Many tried to make a non-violent movement and were still shot down and told to silence their movement. Many middle aged Puerto Ricans raised in the United States disagreed with the action plan of the Young Lords,they believed the young lords were just causing trouble in each city they arrived in. They refuse to allow the idea of change into their mind as well as the minds of their children. They didn’t want the fight to make things worse for Puerto Rico’s freedom. Senor Santiago and is shaved ice stand was a fixture to what people called spanish harlem. Evelyn once described señor Santiago’s eyes as sad as the hope of a poor person(“sad as la esperanza de un pobre”). He was hassled by the police for selling his desserts on the street, even though that was the only way he made a living for him and his son. Evelyn’s mother works hard at the bodega in hopes of buying a home in the bronx. Hope played such a large part of the life of the puerto Rican citizens. They knew of the struggle they were facing, they both knew the unfairness they were dealing with compared to the dominant races of the 1970’s in New york. They were afraid as well, Evelyn’s mother told her she would make things worse for puerto ricans if she join the fight to finally make a change to this unfairness. They didn’t want a change because believe the only change they would receive would be a worse one. They felt as if there was a chance for communities to get better,but they would alway be bottom of the barrel. They
