Evanna Kane got into her beige Toyota Corolla, relaxing into the seat as she started her car. She was the kind of person who would drive just for the sake of driving. Her hand rose to turn on the radio as a truck hit her from behind. By the time Evanna realized what was going on, her head had already shattered the glass of her car’s windshield. The pain she felt overshadowed the fact that she was slowly dying. As her head pounded, all she could see were images from her past. . . . The door opens and a concerned-looking Zeke darts to her side. “He’s not worth it,” Zeke murmurs into fifteen-year-old Evanna’s hair, her sobs quieting down a little. Another image pops out at Evanna, as a shard of glass is blown at her cheek: Evanna is at her school prom this time, surrounded by her friends and classmates. She sees herself dancing with Ryder Hemmington, the boy she wasted half her high school life with. She was so absorbed by him that she didn’t notice Zeke by the punch stand, watching her wistfully. As the images continued to flow, they all remained similar. In all of them, Zeke had been there for her, but she’d never noticed because she was always distracted by other things. Evanna’s breathing slowed as she drifted into unconsciousness. As she breathed her last, a sound came from inside her car. Her rose-gold iPhone 6s beeped, indicating that she had received a message: “Hey, Evy. It’s Zeke. Before I lose my courage, I just wanted to tell you that I have feelings for you.
