Life is about learning, enhancing, and personal growth. This occurs within developmental phases and specific stages one goes through. A key concept within the Social work profession is to meet the client where they are. It is simple to assess a client’s situation and go through the helping process along with them. However, to reach full understanding of the client, their behaviors, and resilience within the helping process it is vital to view the client within their life cycle stage. Evaluating the Erikson’s Stages of development and Carol Gilligan’s theory on Moral development better explain the reasons for the way a client may view and deal with their situation. Personalities are built around a person’s experiences and environment as Gould (1988) states in his article, “Gilligan argues that primary care takers for girls but not for boys is a member of the gender as they, it leads to differences in personality structure that produce general differences in types of moral reasoning” (p. 412). In connection to Erikson’s developmental stages one common element found in both their theories is the caring attitude an adult may find himself or herself in. Which leads to her being a positive role model in their lives and greatly impacts their development eventually influencing future generations. This sense of generativity that Erikson speaks about it is seen in the dedication this client has to her education and family in efforts to leave a legacy in her family (Erikson, n.d.). However, Erik Erikson’s studied white, middle-class males and then his theory was applied universally and included women development (Shuiling & Likis, 2013).
