Document 5 illustrates the fighting that occurred between the Natives and European. Most times the cause of this fighting was that Europeans were taking over land that was not rightfully theirs. In the mid 1800’s trade with Native Americans in the North West was extremely popular. One of the names associated with early trade in the North West is Hudson’s Bay Company. Hudson’s Bay was an English company that would trade goods to the indigenous people for furs, provisions, and other things. Trade with Native Americans was extremely popular during this time because the Native Americans desperately wanted what the Europeans had. That is why I think that the Europeans were benefited more by this trade agreement then the indigenous people of the North West.
In the “American Holocaust” by David Stannard, Stannard points out how the Spaniards, British, and Americans were treating the indigenous people differently. In chapter 1 of the “American Holocaust,” Stannard talks about how the Europeans main goal was to find and acquire gold. When the Europeans began to arrive in America they began to discover a land that contained a variety of gold. Once they discovered that there was gold they began to establish and did not see the indigenous people as part of the land. As you can see, the Europeans were able to conquer the Native American’s easily. They were able to do this because of their geography, weapons, and diseases. Their soil was very rich and they had domesticated animals. Also, the guns they had allowed them to shoot from long distances. Their horses allowed the Europeans to travel faster. Also, the diseases like Malaria and Smallpox let them settle easier.

The Native Americans were given some laws of protection, however, by this point many Spaniards looked at Native Americans as vile human beings and mistreated them as a social normalcy. Many native Americans died from overwork, and harsh living conditions given to them by the Spaniards. Native Americans introduced the Spaniards and settlers to different types of crops. The Europeans drew much wealth from the New World. By taking away the freedom of the Native Americans, the Europeans were able to acquire gold. While doing so, Native Americans were kept enslaved and suffering with strict rules they were forced to abide. Due to the mass of diseases and epidemics the Europeans brought to America, the Indians were susceptible and forced to accept the aggression. If these rules were not obeyed by the Natives, mistreatment of these Indians would take place. This mistreatment was not allowed according to the Christian religion, though. Cutting off the hands of the Indians was one of the nastiest punishments the Europeans performed. The Indians would come back with little or no gold and the Europeans became angry which lead to more cruelty towards them. The Europeans were now able to increase trade.
Native Americans had inherited the land now called America and eventually their lives were destroyed due to European Colonization. When the Europeans arrived and settled, they changed the Native American way of life for the worst. These changes were caused by a number of factors including disease, loss of land, attempts to export religion, and laws, which violated Native American culture.
Native Americans suffered hundreds of years of violence, discrimination and forced relocation from their land, during the European invasion of North America. After the Europeans arrive, Indian culture soon became endangered, a culture which developed distinctively shaped tools, sewing needles, clothing, jewelry and weapons. They held strong their own higher cultural beliefs, and legends, retold to them for many generations. During the era of colonization in the United States, Native Americans were subjected to years of despair, of which includes ravaging diseases, conversion to Christianity, European technology, and procurement of native land.
Both the Europeans and Indigenous People were treated differently than African American slaves since they had slightly more freedom and rights, but in many ways they are also treated the same. The social construction of race between the Europeans, Indigenous People, and Africans led to the establishment of how one group is different from the other. Europeans are one of the groups that have been racialized during the colonial times. Since the Europeans strived for power and expansion to gain wealth for their motherland, they voyaged around to look for new places to control or get resources from. During their explorations, the Europeans also encountered other groups that were also racialized for a long period of time.
The Native Americans were the earliest and only settlers in the North American continents for more than thousands of years. Many began to believe this was God’s plans for them to civilize the country in which many would push westward and drive the Indians out to promote civilization and progress. The European exploration and colonization resulted in commercial expansion of trade in agricultural products between Europe and America. In some time, colonization resulted in religious tolerance and representative government that have for several years encouraged similar developments in other countries. In addition, early European exploration led to redistribution of human populations as magnitude of people from Europe and Africa moved to America. Before the colonization and exploration period, the Native Americans had established a number of forms of social organization.
In some instances, the white settlers raided and stole food from the Indians. This worsened the already fractured relations between the two groups.
