Anthropology
At Essex High School we have an array of different classes we can take. Anthropology should be added to the choices of classes students at Essex High School can take. Anthropology is a Social science and it would be added as a Social studies class. Anthropology teaches students about human culture. Students would get the opportunity about where they came from and how evolution has made them who they are. Anthropology is not an easy concept. It will challenge students thinking and make them think more in depth.
Anthropology is a combination of the science and the history of humanity. There are multiple branches that are brake off from Anthropology like cultural and linguistic anthropology. People who venture into Anthropology can find them being real life Indiana Jones. Searching for lost mummies and uncovering historical artifacts. The people who do this kind of work are Forensic Anthropologists. These Anthropologists are payed to travel around the world and uncover the secrets of humanity. It’s not just the study our cultures history. It’s also about our culture in present time. Media anthropologists study the media and its effects on humanity. They study movie, internet and even the culture behind the radio. Anthropology is a broad course and it will interest a range of audiences. Anthropology is the study of the development of humankind within their different cultures. When one looks inside a culture, they can see the true aspects and meanings behind a societies behavior and traits. By following the principle that is cultural relativism, one can also determine that no culture truly surpasses another culture, and that each society has key differences that are important to its culture and location. This is a method that can also be seen in many intriguing films from this semester, one in particular being The Emerald Forest. Throughout this essay, this film will be analyzed around one character who greatly represents what it means to truly immerse oneself into a different culture to gain a new perspective, and many key terms in anthropology will be explored through 4 different films from the semester.
Anthropology is the study of humans. This area of study is subdivided into three sections; cultural anthropology, archeology, and biological anthropology. Biological anthropologists study the anatomy, and evolution of the human body. Biological anthropologists are the ones who assess skeletal remains and determine where, when, and who, the person was. Human skeletal remains are the main component in Forensic Anthropology. Bones can reveal ancestral lineage, gender, height and age of a person.
Participant observation is a method of collecting information and data about a culture and is carried out by the researcher immersing themselves in the culture they observing. The researcher becomes known in the community, getting to know and understand the culture in a more intimate and detailed way than would be possible from any other approach. This is done by observing and participating in the community’s daily activities. The method is so effective because the researcher is able to directly approach the people in the community in a natural context as opposed to taking the participant out of their environment. The aim of participant observation is to gain an understanding the subject’s life from their perspective, with the purpose of collecting more detailed information about a community’s habits, opinions, relationships and issues.
Cultural Anthropology is a term that is in everyday lives and topics. When one thinks of anthropology they think of the study of old remnants commonly referred to as archaeology. This, however, is not the only form of anthropology. There are four types of anthropology and they are archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. However, Cultural anthropologists are every where and study people of all walks of life. One can find a topic and find some type of study that an anthropologist has conducted on the matter. The following are five articles that explain how anthropologists are every where.
Anthropologie is one of my favorite stores to shop at. Their clothes are sophisticated but still fun and free-spirited. I decided to do my report on Anthropologie because I would one day like to work for them and want to be knowledgeable on a company before an interview. Through my research, I was able to discover things that I did not know about Anthropologie. Anthropologie is a unique company with a very innovative style of doing things from their story, growth, visual merchandising, teams, and a large amount of shared stocks.
Cultural anthropology involves exploring social and cultural variations of humans. Linguistic anthropology studies how language shapes communication. Archaeology is the study of earlier cultures by analyzing and interpreting material remains. Biological anthropology includes topics such as genetics, evolution, and growth and development. Cultural anthropology can give a more in depth perspective on how different cultures, religions, and nations interact with their children.
Culture is beautifully complex. Cultural practices naturally, therefore, are made up of intricate implicit and explicit thoughts and behaviours. Participant-observation is at the centre of anthropological research because it allows the anthropologist to experience rather than read. Bronislaw Malinowski, regarded as the father of participant-observation, created a scientific framework for how research could be conducted in the field. This framework has evolved as anthropology has changed over the ages. Anthropology is the study of humans through the ages. It aims to understand different cultures and practices that have existed from the origins of mankind as well. It differs from sociology in that it takes into account humans and cultures that no longer exist.
Forensics Anthropology is the study that goes beyond the human skeleton. A forensics anthropologist can find out. How a person lived, the food that person ate, and the overall make-up of a human. The use of forensics has grown in recent years, it is used to solve crimes and locate missing persons. Snow, (1982) Forensics anthropology is not a new science. The first case forensics anthropology was used on was the Jezebel case, dating back to the nineteenth century. This case involved a person, who was thrown from a window. Snow, (1982) The remains found in this case were the skull, feet, and the palm of the victim’s hands.
One cannot generalize or predict all human behaviors, thought processes, morals, and customs. Because human nature is dominated by different types of cultures and societies in various parts of the world, this can often lead to misunderstanding which ultimately leads to the illusion of cultural superiority, and in most cases this can lead to genocide - the systematic murder or annihilation of a group of people or culture. Anthropology is the study of humans, our immediate ancestors and their cultural environments this study stems from the science of holism - the study of the human condition. Cultural anthropology has taught me a lot in such a short time. This class has been very eye opening to me and has made me think more about the different cultures around me and just how important it is to learn about them.
