When watching a movie some people tend to think that we only care about the visual experience. Of course what we see on the screen does play a major role in our perception of the film but many other elements come into play in movies such as sound and/or music in the background. To make a successful movie there are three essential ingredients needed. Those three ingredients are the human voice, sound effects, and background music according to Thomas Sobochack. The first ingredient is the human voice. The human voice gives the actor or actress the perception of being a real person instead of just someone telling the story. Dialogue can help either make or break a film, with this being said the way the actor or actress expresses his or her feelings and emotions can help the audience connect to the story more. For example, in the film we watched in class called The Maltese Falcon (1941), we were introduced to the main character named Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart). Thomas Sobochrack states that background music is used to add emotion and rhythm to a film. Background music is usually not meant for people to easily pick out but it is there to provide a tone towards the specific scene. For example, in another movie that we watched in class called The Right Stuff (1984), as the astronauts are going up into space they have dramatic music in the background hoping it will intensify the way you are feeling. Another easy example of background noise is easy to pick out in horror movies. In the movie Halloween (1963), whenever Michael Meyers in on the hunt or chasing one of his victims there is eerie music playing in the background. You can also point out scenes with special background noise in popular films such as Jaws (1975).
