Athletic Scholarships are worth $20-$50,000 per year. (Text 4 Line 5). Why do College athletes need to be paid when they are basically receiving free money? The scholarship ensures they will have everything they need, so they do not have to spend money when they are at college. If they don’t have to spend money they don’t need to receive money. College athletes should not be paid because they basically are already getting paid, and if colleges were to pay athletes it would create many unwanted changes. College athletes receive payments in the form of a free education, materials, professional coaching, and brand building. They are able to use their own money for luxuries instead of necessities, like the regular college students. Athletes also obtain many benefits to compensate for not being paid. Those benefits are comprised of, “…medical and travel expenses, free gear, top-notch coaching, unlimited use of elite athletic facilities and a national stage to audition for a job in the professional ranks.” (Text 4 Line 4-6). These athletes acquire many more aids than the regular college student, the benefits are payment enough. Those universities would be able to take the best of the best athletes and the others schools would be stuck with the “leftovers.” If students get payed for playing a sport, it will mess with the balance of the college sports industry, and result in unwanted changes. However there is a discrepancy in what people believe, some say college athletes should be paid. They think because the college sports industry makes $11 billion a year, (Text 1 Line 1) that the athletes should receive some of that money. What those people do not understand is that that money is not just sitting around waiting to be spent. According to Zach Dirlam, “96% of the revenue the NCAA brings in annually is redistributed to its members’ institutions.” (Text 4 Line 57-58).
