“The majority of the early women members legislated in areas deemed by their society to be gender appropriate; women were viewed as caregivers, educators, and consumers.”(The Women's Rights Movement, 1848-1920). Women weren't able to just do as they please. They had an image to portray for society. Before 1920 women had few to no rights. Men did not believe men and women were equal; therefore, women, who felt that they deserve just as much freedom as them, decided to get their freedom.

“Facial make-up previously forbidden by middle-class conventions began to be used as a few young women dubbed on rogue and eyeshadow; by the 1920’s its use would become widespread.” (Chambers, 95). Women couldn’t even make the choice of what they wore. Make-up was forbidden and women were looked down on for wearing such.
Before groups or organizations of women there were women reformers. “Women reformers addressed social and institutional barriers that limited women's rights, including family responsibilities, lack of educational and economic opportunities, and the absence in political debates.” (The Women’s Rights Movement, 1848-1920). Women reformers opened the doors for women to speak up. This caused them to form groups and organizations.
Women formed many groups and organizations to fight for their equality. “These organizations held protests, riots, and seminars where women could speak out to politicians and other women.”(Reid).
