Willy Loman and His Important Relationships In Death of a Salesman there are many important relationships, although there are mainly two that really impact Willy Loman and that is Biff Loman(his son) and the woman(his mistress). Throughout the play there are several times when Biff and Willy either get along or are fighting. The woman and Willy’s relationship is entirely based on cheating although, the play doesn’t exactly say that the woman is in a relationship but the play distinctly says that Willy is married to Linda. Both these characters bring tension and tells its audience more about the protagonist Willy. Biff Loman is the oldest son of Willy Loman. When Biff was a teenager he looked up to his dad, Willy, as a superhero. Willy was not exactly the best dad but he was the best he could be. It wasn’t until Biff had gone to Boston to explain to his dad that he failed math and he caught his father cheating on Linda. Biff was destroyed and said that Willy was a phony and that he was no good. After that scene Biff and Willy’s relationship changed, they were always arguing, angry, and disrespectful towards each other. For example, both are do everything out of spite for one another. Their relationship proves that Willy is hubris, has too much false pride, and is spiteful towards anybody who disagrees with him. People may refer to him as the tragic hero in Death of a Salesman. He has his tragic flaw which then just leads him to his tragic fall. Willy’s tragic flaw was his pride and it was that, that had lead him into his tragic fall which was his suicide. In a way, Biff adds on to Willy’s tragic flaw because the only thing he wanted to do was make his dad happy. He never stood up to his dad until he had saw him with a mistress.
