Wildlife crimes are unfortunately becoming an increasingly more common occurrence around the world. There are many different types of wildlife crimes, but they all share the unfortunate consequences of degradation of our environment, our natural ecosystems, and our way of life. In this essay, I will be looking at what exactly is wildlife crime, some of the reasons why wildlife crimes committed, and what can be done to reduce or even eliminate wildlife crimes as a whole. There is a wide range of different offenses that can fall under the vast category of wildlife crimes. On average, most offenders of wildlife trafficking laws only serve about a year in state or federal prison. Their sentence generally depends on the severity of the crime and where the crime was committed. In the United States, different states may have different statutes in place defining the sentences for wildlife crimes committed in their jurisdiction. However, in addition to their prison sentence, offenders are forced to pay the government most, if not all of their profits gained from their illegal activity. These profits can range anywhere from thousands of dollars, to tens of millions of dollars. A considerably large and important part of this initiative is education. Public education can go a long way in attempting to end any kind of ongoing crisis. A lot of times, the majority of the general public does not know very much about a particular issue that you are passionate about. I have found this to be especially true with wildlife crime and illegal wildlife trafficking. Personally I did not know a lot about this topic before I started this research paper, but over the course of my research I have become very familiar with the issue of wildlife crime and illegal trafficking.
