“Hamlet”, like many of Shakespeare’s plays, involves deaths and tragedies. However, the tragic nature of the play and the ultimate demise of many characters in “Hamlet” can’t be attributed to any particular event or character. Rather, the fates of the these characters are connected through a string of causality that resulted from personal motives and inevitable human nature. Ultimately, if there is truly anything to blame, let it be perspectives and obligations.
The series of cause and consequence began with King Hamlet’s desire for revenge. Hamlet was once a fearless king who conquered nations and subdued his great foe with overwhelming might. However, all those vanished within a matter of a moment, like a transient sunset. King Hamlet experienced betrayal at the pinnacle of his career, during which he is least expected it. From Hamlet’s perspective, Gertrude is simply a disloyal woman with neither honor nor willpower. During his encounter with his mother, he even blatantly criticized his mother with a spiteful tone: “And sets a blister there, makes marriage vows / As false as dicers’ oaths... (Shakespeare 3.4.38-39)” In reality, Hamlet’s mother faces more hardship than Hamlet realizes. As a queen of a country, her choices are often not within her power to make. All young Hamlet saw was that Gertrude abandoned King Hamlet and degraded her status by marrying his uncle. However, there are potentially a variety of political and social factors that led to such outcome. Hamlet, blinded by his own revenge, fails to consider his mother’s dilemma.
