Maya Lin stated that “I felt a memorial should be honest about the reality of war, and be for the people who gave their lives.” Maya Lin, an undergraduate architect, designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for the support of veterans who fought in Vietnam. The 58,000 names on the memorial represent who served in the Vietnam War. The 21 year old girl’s design caused many controversies towards the memorial. The memorial had a significant impact on Americans that changed some of their views about the veterans who sacrificed their lives. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was a significant event in America because it stood as a symbol of recognition and healing for those who fought in the war. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was built as a tribute to the dead who fought in the unpopular war. The Vietnam War was a long conflict that opposed the communist governor of North Vietnam. In a larger conflict, the war took place in 1955 to 1975, between the United States and the Soviet Union. By 1969, America sent their troops to Vietnam however the U.S. combat units retreated by 1973. During the war more than three million people were killed, including 58,000 Americans. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial took place as a way of reminding people of “America’s Longest War”. As veterans came back from the war, many felt unconnected with the people because of their harsh behaviors. Maya Lin designed a memorial to honor those who sacrificed their lives to save their country. The memorial stands as a realization to people about the 58,000 veterans who sacrificed their lives. Many thought of the memorial as being a non heroic memorial. However, many believed that the memorial is a heroic figure. The poem's persona and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall depend on each other to express the poem's intention. The poem's intention is to show that war is lethal, less than gloriful, and extremely real. Although years have gone by, these recollections are still affecting how he lives. Simply standing in front of the wall reminds the speaker of all of this. The Veterans Memorial takes on a life of its own. While the speaker is in its presense, the wall controls him. It forces him to remember painful memories and even cry, something he promised himself he would not do. The persona in the poem reacts to the power the wall has and realizes that he must face his past and everything related to it, especially Vietnam.
The everyday bystander would not perceive the work of art the same as a veteran or loved ones of a veteran would. In a particular instance a woman, Kathleen Cronan Wyosnick, wrote a very heartfelt letter to Abigail VanBuren [Abby] who was the first honorary member elected to the Korean War Veterans Association and previously a newspaper columnist. On November 11th, 1988 Wyosnick wrote to VanBuren pleading to consider a special group of men and women who fought in the Korean War, which is better known as the “forgotten war”. Wyosnick described in her letter how she was a former Air Force nurse who had lost her husband in the Korean War, she wrote about how the war is described in nothing more than a few paragraphs in text books. She said the only media reminder to the public of the war is a television show “M*A*S*H”. Just eight months after they got married her husband was shot down in North Korea on his first combat mission, and she never had him returned to her. She asked where the reminder of those who gave their lives in Korea was. She also asked what the Korean War Veterans Association will do to ensure that the people who lost their lives are not forgotten. The Vietnam War was known for the thousands of lives that were lost and the billions of dollars in debt that destroyed the US economy. To this day, it is debatable as to whether or not US involvement in the war was worth the devastation it caused to the country. In 1954, French involvement in Vietnam ended and led to the Geneva Conference where a ceasefire agreement was negotiated. From the Geneva Accords, Vietnam was divided into two portions, North and South, at the 17th parallel. At the time, North Vietnam was communist and was gaining followers quickly (Rogers).
Agencies and groups should consider the purpose, location, and size of the monument in order to respect peoples' achievements and sacrifices as well as events. Monuments reminds people about the great leaders and events that happened in the past. However, not everyone gets their own monument because in order to be honored and respected, one must either accomplish a huge achievement or sacrifice for the greater good. As the American designer, artist and architect Maya Lin once said, " Every memorial in its time has a different goal."
The Vietnam War lasted from the winter of 1956 to the spring of 1975. The Vietnam War was a domesticated civil war between the communist, North Vietnam, and the democratic, South Vietnam. The North was supported by the Chinese communist, and the leader Ho Chi Minh. The Vietnam War introduced the United States to the Vietcong and Guerrilla warfare. During this time, the United States faced our own battles at home between two social groups called the Doves and the Hawks. This war was very divisive. The Doves protested and Hawks shunned them. Young men without money were being drafted while others went to college, got a medical note, or fled the country. Tensions were already high in the United States when Congress passed Public Law 88- 408, also known as the Tonkin Gulf Resolution.
The design of a memorial needs to be intriguing, representative, and appropriate for it's environment. Creating a memorial that is tasteful and intriguing will help draw people towards it. When designing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Maya Lin decided that the memorial should be only the names of the veterans, and that there was, "no need to embellish the design further"(Source G). Lin also chose black granite to construct the memorial. The surface of the granite was intriguing, reflective, and peaceful. Instead of names, speeches were carved into the Lincoln Memorial(Source A). The Lincoln Memorial is said to only be representative of Abraham Lincoln. The memorial is composed of, "a colossal marble statue and the text of two speeches carved on enormous panels, all housed in a neoclassic temple" (Source A). The memorial is not paying homage to a deep sacrifice, it is entirely representing the greatness of Lincoln. Along with the Lincoln Memorial, the monument of Christopher Columbus in Riverside Park, Easton, Pennsylvania, is another memorial which is representative(Source B). Washington, DC is a spectacular place. This being my first time in DC, I was in awe of everything and all the historical places I encountered. The presence of the monuments and history is what made the capitol so magnificent. Having only read about the Lincoln memorial, I never had the chance to experience the sensation of being inside such an honorable place of importance. The imposing white marble walls of the memorial and the many people surrounding it could be seen from afar. Arriving at the location, an unknown feeling came over me. I was experiencing history in a whole different level. When I think about a memorial, the term remembrance comes to mind. Seeing the statue of Abraham Lincoln brought pieces of memories from history class and evoked thoughts of what it might have felt like to be in his shoes. I was astonished by the statue’s enormousness and how grand Abraham Lincoln looked in his chair. The size of the statue compared to pictures from books and elsewhere was surreal. Abraham Lincoln was a very “powerful and prominent individual” in the history of our nation, the statue’s design and size reflected upon that. Looking around me, I wanted to know what the others thoughts were on seeing his statue and how they felt in that building. I finally had the courage to ask one or two people what they thought; they all had the same appreciation as me. Hearing about an important person or learning about them in a history book gives you vast knowledge but it doesn’t evoke the feeling of utter appreciation as the memorial does. After the horrors of the Vietnam War a national monument honoring the brave soldiers was asked to be developed. In 1981, Maya Lin, an undergraduate at Yale University entered her design in the nationwide competition that was sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. From more than 1,400 submissions Maya Lin’s design was picked (Vietnam Veterans Memorial). The memorial was a black granite V-shaped sunken wall, which was composed of seventy-four panels that increased its height from eight inches to more than ten feet. The 58,000 Americans didn’t have to die, nor did the 2,000,000 Vietnamese. The U.S government was responsible for their deaths. What the government told the public from the very beginning was that they were going to war because they had to stop the communist menace in Vietnam or other countries would follow suit; that they had to defend the democratic South Vietnamese government against the gathering Red hordes. While other people say it was an attempt by the U.S to suppress a heroic Vietnamese national liberation movement that had driven French colonialism out of its country (Drake, 1993).
