Ever thought about getting involved with drugs? Peer pressure can be a major affect on a person’s decision. That’s why the people a person surrounds themselves with are important. In the novel Tweak by Nic Sheff, the author explains his life and how he grew up with “that life” on drugs. Eventually after getting the help needed before it was absolutely too late, all Sheff has are the memories to look back on, knowing that he made it through to a better life. Nic’s conflict with his past of being a drug addict teaches the reader the terrible effects drugs can have on a person through Nic losing his family, friends, job, money, and even a place to live.

Nic would end up sneaking into houses to sleep in the basements for the night and then be gone by morning. Losing his job meant that he’d no longer be making money, so all that he had was whatever was in his savings. But, he still had his addiction and friends. Everyday, Nic and one of his friends would get high off of heroin. Later, starting a drug dealing business is when Nic’s savings account started getting smaller. Not only did they spend it on drugs but of course they needed food. So eventually they hit rock bottom, “Yet here i am, standing in line with a little yellow ticket in my hand- the sun blocked out by the dry-rot buildings” (Sheff 104). At this point, Nic had realized he needed to get it together. Spending all of his savings on his drug addiction had left him broke, and homeless, with nothing to eat. Spencer helped Nic getting into rehab to help him off his addiction. It worked for the most part until his long lost love, Zelda, came back into the picture. Spencer would repeatedly tell him,“You don’t love her, Nic. You love the idea of her” (Sheff 216). Zelda had dragged him back down to where he had started off. She was more unstable than he ever was. But soon enough, Nic had realized he couldn’t go down that path again. He would disappoint the ones who actually loved and cared for him but more importantly, himself. Nic now has his old life to look on, being a drug addict. He no longer uses and has made better of himself. His recovery from his addiction had impacted his life greatly because he could have been dead with the path he was going
