Essay On Truss Bridge

Bridge Research “Triangles are the most sound structure for a bridge” (Alise). We have found that triangles are a very good support to build a strong bridge. Some arch bridges and truss bridges use triangles to have better support. Almost all, especially the big and reliable ones are made of steel or iron. However, those materials aren’t all that we need for a strong bridge (thank goodness because we are only allowed balsa wood and wood glue for ours). A really simple bridge is called the beam bridge. A beam bridge is essentially a long platform that is held up with beams on either side. The only problem with this bridge is that if you put too much weight in the center it will start to bow and eventually break. There is very little support to the bridge and that’s why it is only holds small amounts of weight. Train bridges are a really strong type of bridge due to the fact that they need to hold very heavy trains. These bridges take advantage of the strong shape of the triangle. Triangles are strong because if you put force on its point it keeps it shape. This is because if you press on its point the force goes down the sides and should stretch out the bottom. Those factors …show more content…

So, we turn to the suspension bridge for these situations. An example of one is the Golden Gate Bridge in California. These bridges work by using tension, which is basically pulling something tight. So the design of the bridge starts with a deck that is suspended from thick cables that stretch from one side to the other side of the bridge. Those cables are supported by tall towers and are then held down tightly or anchored on both ends of the bridge. These bridges are strong because the force on the bridge gets spread out. The weight going across the bridge creates tension in the cables which then pull down on the towers and anchors on both sides to then hold up the
