Whether its gift hunting, New Year shopping or even school materials shopping, we all transform into festive shoppers at that time of the year. So shoppers at your marks get set, shop. And if you are waiting for last minute shopping be careful not to get caught into the frenzy peeps. Shopping, shopping and shopping… that’s what’s mostly on our mind and in our mood at this time of the year. With all the good stuffs, attractive prices and the payment facilities, it’s difficult to resist the shopping frenzy. Shops, shopping malls, streets, everywhere are buzzing with people at that time of the year. Shoppers are looking to reap some amazing bargains while retailers are trying to move as much stock. Shopping for clothing is a particularly personal decision, and various motivating factors can cause one shopper to choose a particular store over another store. Some consumers go to the store to confirm that they belong to a certain social stratum, others because they enjoy the thrill of a bargain. According to Daniel Miller in ‘Making Love in Super Markets’, the behavior of consumers in supermarkets tends to fall into two categories: ‘treat’ shoppers and ‘thrift’ shoppers.
Chain stores, such as K-Mart and Wal-Mart swing their doors wide for all deal seekers at around 6 a.m. Individuals will wake up earlier than necessary, drive to these stores, and camp out prior to the stores opening, if only just to ensure they get the best spot in line. Also near this time, various online deals begin. This means before many people wake up on Thanksgiving morning, sales have already started both in store and online. By this standard, the day’s workers have to get to the store hours before it opens to prepare the store for the surplus of people and the chaos that will soon enfold. People should be getting rest or preparing food for their lunches or dinners, but instead they are shopping or working. Retailers place priority on shopping from the moment people wake up until they go to sleep. There is never an emphasis on family throughout the entire day in these chain stores. Christmas has consumed itself. At its conception, it was a fine idea, and I imagine that at one point its execution worked very much as it was intended to. These days, however, its meaning has been perverted; its true purpose ignored and replaced with a purpose imagined by those who merely go through the motions, without actually knowing why they do so.

You need the feeling of power that comes with buying or not buying it. You need the feeling that someone wants something you have--even if it's just your money. Holidays have always been known to affect our consumer culture for many years, but how it all began eludes many people and very few studies have been completed on it. Everyone likes shopping, but everyone has their own way of spending when they go shopping. I love shopping, but I hate being at the mall, if I don’t need to be there then I won’t be there. I’ve noticed that when I have money, I do not buy anything, and when I do not have money I want everything I see. From my experience I’ve observed that there are people who shop smart, people who are just plain addicted to shopping, people who join another person while shopping, basically called window watchers.
