Canada and the United States of America have a very healthy relationship today and throughout history. These two countries are in a “happy marriage” meaning they both work together and have prominent economic ties. For many reasons, their relations are healthy, but there are 3 reasons that stand out. Canada and the USA have a healthy connection because they have been close trading partners, they have similar values, and they have alliances and treaties. This was the start of the immense trading world between Canada and the USA. Before World War I, Canada and the United States were not as closely related in trading. At that time, the USA had 39.8 million people, about 10 times the amount of people in Canada which was only 3.7 million . Canada would export fisheries, lumber and agricultural products while from the USA, Canada would import manufactured products. However, Britain was Canada’s main trading ally before WW1 as Canada was still under the British rule. Canada’s economy along with the United States’ started to plummet with the rise of tariffs and debt which ultimately led to The Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression in 1929 until 1939. As a result, the trade with the US and Canada exceeded the Canadian marketing with Britain. Their values are similar in terms of government, diversity and human rights. In both countries, the governments are run democratically. The people of the country vote for their leader rather than the leader be appointed by themselves like a dictator. Both countries are civil with each other because both the people and the governments believe in democracy over communism or fascism. Therefore, we get along in a way that we have parallel views about how our countries are to be run in peace and equality. Also, Canada and the United States bond over the diverse populations we have and the cultural influences we have endorsed over the years. In Canada, more than 200 languages were reported in the 2011 Census of Population as a home language or mother tongue . Likewise, there are about 14 million households in the United States which English is not spoken as a first language . With this variety of languages and cultures, Canada and the USA share the same inclusive values and therefore develop a healthy relationship. Additionally, these two countries both believe that all human beings deserves rights and freedoms with no exclusions or exceptions. Of course there are some people within these countries who think the opposite of equality, however as a whole, both countries try to enforce human rights and freedoms. For
