Gronkowski excelled in football and basketball in his youth and attended the University of Arizona to play for the Arizona Wildcats football team starting in 2007. Though he missed his junior season due to back surgery, he was later drafted by the New England Patriots in the 2010 NFL Draft.
Gronkowski quickly proved himself to be one of the game’s elite tight ends, creating a formidable duo with star quarterback Tom Brady to lead the league in receiving touchdowns in the 2011 – 2012 season. He was a critical component of the team’s Super Bowl run during that season, though they ultimately fell just short to the New York Giants.
After missing a number of games in the 2013 – 2014 season, he stormed back to win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in the 2014 – 2015 season, also helping the Patriots defeat the Seattle Seahawks in thrilling fashion to capture his first Super Bowl ring. After another successful season the following year that included another postseason appearance, Gronkowski suffered a back injury towards the end of the 2016 – 2017 season that caused him to miss its final weeks and postseason, though he still contributed greatly to the team’s efforts and was on-hand as they staged the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history to stun the Atlanta Falcons in overtime in Super Bowl
