Rocky Relationships between Parents, Star-crossed Lovers, and Modern Teens Deep in the mind of famous play writer William Shakespeare lies, the brilliant story of Romeo and Juliet, the story that not only captivates and thrills reader’s minds but offers insight on how a flawed relationship can end in a tragedy. Unfortunately, due to sin all relationships, including that of Romeo and Juliet’s have their ups and downs. Today the most commonly known flawed relationship is the relationship between a teenager and parent. Perhaps this is because of opposing ideas or lack of communication, but never the less the true weakness will always fall back to sin. Throughout the play, a knowledgeable reader can sense a sort of tension between Juliet and her parents. More than likely this was because of a lack of visible parental love. Perhaps Juliet’s parents were too busy finding suitable marriage candidates, deepening their blood feud, or maintain a good social status to dedicate the much needed time with Juliet. Without quality one on one time with her parent’s Juliet’s main scores of parental love fell to Friar Lawrence and Nurse. Toward the play’s eventful ending Friar Lawrence exhibits his parental love by expressing deep concern over Juliet’s arranged marriage. Just as Paris leaves Friar Lawrence declares, “Ah, Juliet, I already know thy grief; It strains me past the compass of my wits”(Romeo and Juliet 4.1.46-47). Friar Lawrence exhibited a deep concern for Juliet’s well-being a concern he defiantly wouldn’t show to a complete stranger. This concern is the love God hungers for as found in first Peter. First Peter one claims, “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins” (The New King James Bible, 1 Peter 4:7). Although this Bible verse states to love one another, it can often be hard as a teen to love with poor parental examples. Parental love is the foundation to a good teen and parent relationship.
