Mission San Juan Capistrano is a mission like no other. Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded in 1775 and in 1776. Serra’s Chapel was the first permanent building. It was made out of Adobe brick instead of wood. Local native Americans helped build the mission and hang the bells. The people worked for 8 days then stopped. They buried the mission. The people came back the next year to dig out and rebuild the mission. A neat fact about San Juan Capistrano is the brand of their livestock is the letters C,A and P twisted together. The American dream was owning a house with a white picket fence. Now this dream is impossible. Individuals and families find it more difficult to find a decent home to rent in a suitable living area. According to Huffington Post, the hourly wage needed to afford a two bedroom apartment in California is at least $26 an hour. This is more than triple the minimum wage. Eviction, relocation, and inflation are the common keywords that associate with affordable housing. I 'm hoping to persuade you to support affordable housing for all. Today, I will be discussing, one, inflation of the housing market that needs to decrease, two, eviction from homes, three having to move to communities far from their work site.
Chinatown is home for many. Many of San Francisco’s Chinese population live in Chinatown, and many of them own or work in one of the many shops and restaurants. On weekends, hundreds of locals gather in Portsmouth’s Square to gamble, dance, and mingle.

Gentrification typically will cause the average income of the area to increase. The areas become less diverse as the racial minorities are being forced out. Home prices increase, rent spikes and evictions increase. “Since 2010, rents have increased an average of 20 percent, the sixth-fastest rise in the nation after cities like New York and San Jose.” (Savitch-Lew, 2016) Because there are not any state laws in effect to limit rent increases, like there are in other cities, Portland residents suffer. People who experience gentrification feel hopeless, out of options and unwanted. Many of the neighborhoods in these areas used to be very close knit. That sense of closeness within these neighborhoods no longer exists. Since the riots in the 1960’s, Detroit’s population has consistently decreased. In the 1950’s Detroit had a population of over 1,849,000, in 2010 Detroit had fewer than 800,000 people lived there (Wikipedia). Detroit’s image as a dangerous and poor city has encouraged those who can to move as soon as possible. However in the past few years the city has applied for bankruptcy and has since been under new management. This new Detroit is much nicer with many new amenities . The government has received more funding, torn down many crumbling buildings, and added many new parks and trails, notably the Dequindre cut (Picture 1) and Milliken State Park (Picture 9) adding to the overall value of ones experience in Detroit.

The two neighborhoods that I chose to use for this assignment are vastly different. The main reason is because they are on opposite sides of the country. The first neighborhood that I visited is the one that I grew up in. This neighborhood is in Connecticut, on the East Coast, all the way across the country from the neighborhood that I currently live in here in West Hollywood. Most of my family lives in Connecticut and Massachusetts and I’m the only one who lives on the West Coast. A big difference is that the neighborhood in Connecticut has houses that are more spaced out, have larger lawns, and very many more trees. There are very few apartments there, unlike where I live now where my entire street is almost all apartment buildings.
There are various influences on everyone’s lives while growing up. I believe the greatest of these influences is the neighborhood you grew up in. I grew up in a quite large, welcoming neighborhood. While living in this neighborhood, I was outgoing and remarkably talkative. Making friends became second nature to me. Playing outdoors from sunrise to sundown playing sports or exploring the outdoors with my friends became a daily routine for me. I was outgoing, talkative, and active. I believe this is the result of the neighborhood I grew up in.
Apartments can be very affordable in a rent-controlled neighborhood, and are much more feasible for families, or students just starting out on their own; whereas, in the country, you may have to buy a home or find hard to find cheap rentals. Transportation costs, groceries, taxes, and utilities are common expenditures for any adult. But, many may find that a large amount of money can be saved on these living expenses in a city.
