Outline the growth of nationalism and militarism in Japan in the 1930s and how it manifested itself. How significant was this in Japan going to war with USA in 1941? Japan 's national slogan during the Meiji period, Fukoku kyōhei “Enrich the country, strengthen the military,” holds as a primary piece of information for the cultural mentality at the time, power to the military. This also symbolized a growth in nationalistic policies. As a result of the Meiji Restoration, the Japanese military had a strong influence on society. This is because almost all leaders in Japanese society during this period were either ex-samurai or descendants of, who held the same values and beliefs, making them the military nobility of preindustrial Japan. Japanese militarism occurred not by an organized plan but rather through passive acceptance by the Japanese public, and was arguably inevitable. An obedient Japanese public intertwined with religious justification, also combined with an independent army were two factors that pushed Japan toward militarism in the 1930 's.Once Japan commenced on the path of militarism it found that because of China’s disorganised state, still suffering from the Opium Wars, it could be easily defeated. This increased Japan 's sense of superiority and their views of nationalism. This sense of superiority grew as following the 1931 Manchurian incident, Japan invaded Manchuria then most of China, with the military acting independent of the government. But to surrender or back down for the Japanese is worse than suicide, as it harms their honour. And so Japan continued its war in China.
