War Unit The question of mandatory national service is a very serious, pressing question. However it generally will vary from person to person. I however feel like it is a very useful service to an extent. People can argue it both ways though. My stance on this issue is strongly leaning towards it being a good program in certain times where we would need to protect our country's national security and people. The government is the ones who ultimately make the decision I feel it should be the people’s choice to decide if we need a draft. If we had voting during a war it would be more effective because sometimes the people of the United States may feel we are dying for a useless unjust war. The selective service is a good backup plan for the United States if the time comes that we would need them to be of service to defend the country. It also promotes the sense of equality among the general population knowing that they are not being singled out for a specific reason other than being qualified to serve. All men have to register when they turn 18 years old, which is the peak of their life really in my opinion, and are more qualified than someone who is 30 years old, or older. A different great aspect to the selective service is it will make people more involved in what the government is doing. Of course considering it could be their lives or a family member's life that may be shipped out to basic and then on to defend the country they life in. Prior to the Vietnam War (1955-1975) service was a required part of citizenship, but now the whole armed forces is at the moment, voluntary. When you join the service you will have more of a voice than an average person who is not serving their country would. This is a very good thing if you become more active in your country. It is better to have a voice and make a difference compared to not having one and letting the government decided what you want for
