Despite that they all had the same experiences with education and the struggle of being different in their youth, Mark Mathabane, Richard Rodriguez, and Malcolm X all learned as adults that education isn't a chore but it's a doorway to success. Education can change people and the way they look at the world. Not only that but i can give you many opportunities. Education is one of the most important things about life. Malcolm X ,African American leader and prominent figure in the Nation of Islam, wasn't always as inspiring as he was. He did many horrible things in his past and it lead him to jail. Malcolm X was embarrassed by the way he wrote and spoke. The thing that saved him and lead him to a better future was books. He read books and dictionary over and over again until he memorized each definition and started using those words in reality. In the article, “Learning to Read” by Malcolm X, Malcolm states “I told the Englishman that my alma mater was books, a good library”. This means that the education he got was …show more content…

He hated the fact of education and thought it was only for white people. In the excerpt from Kaffir Boy, Mark Mathabane states “They, like myself, had grown up in an environment where the value of an education was never emphasized, where the first thing a child learned was not how to read and write and spell, but how to fight and steal and rebel” When he said that he means that school wasn't a priority to people where he was from. The reason why it's not important to most people there is because of poverty. Mark Claims that “Throughout seven years of hectic living the number of baths I had taken could be counted on one hand with several fingers missing.” What he means is that the poverty was so bad that even showers were taken only a few times a year or even less. School taught Mark that its not only for white people but its for all, and it can change
