Machine learning is the concept of artificial intelligence learning on its own through large amounts of data inputted by people. Modern society is embedded with this intriguing technology. This exciting technology has allowed people, and businesses’, to access information with the tip of their finger. Machine learning is virtually utilized everywhere: homes, businesses, and schools. As a result, machine learning has created a sense of ease toward people’s daily interactions. The main purpose of machine learning is for a computer to predict future trends by analyzing big data. Kevin P. Murphy, who wrote Machine Learning: A Probabilistic Perspective defines machine learning as “as a set of methods that can automatically detect patterns in data, and the use the uncovered patterns to predict future data, or to perform other kinds of decisions making under uncertainty…” (Kevin P Murphy. Some discrepancies with machine learning are: it’s not always accurate, the information can be obtained by an unauthorized user for malicious intent, and it can invade a person privacy. Machine learning is based of human input of data. The data that is inputted may not always be accurate, which could produce false information. Another challenge of machine learning is the protection of data. Within today’s society, we are plagued with people trying to hack into organizations database to steal personal data. Personal data can be classified as mother’s maiden names, account numbers, and social security numbers. This theft causes people and organizing billions of dollars. Protecting personal information is another challenge that remains in the field of machine learning. An example of this would-be Target identifying a teenage customer pregnancy before the pregnant teen can notify her parents.
