CRP 3: Lord of the Flies The relationship between Ralph and Jack in the novel, Lord of the Flies, was a friendly one at the start when they first met. When the boys voted for Ralph to be chief, Ralph was “was eager to offer something” to Jack. This shows his friendliness. He did not want Jack to feel unequal and therefore, offered him to be in charge of his choir group as hunters. This makes readers like Ralph as being a fair person. However, as the story moves on, the relationship is filled with more enmity. At one point, Jack decides to leave Ralph’s group. He did not want to be “part of Ralph’s lot” anymore. This shows he wanted to start a group of his own and become a leader and therefore, inviting people to join him. He also tries to be more convincing by saying “hunt”. Food is very important for survival in an island. Moreover, when all the boys were together, Jack and his group were the ones who brought food to everyone. Therefore if the boys were to join Jack’s group, they could be more assured of getting food than staying with Ralph. This shows how much Jack’s wants to be a respected leader. Their enmity led to even Jack planning to kill Ralph. he turning point in their relationship was when Ralph insults Jack and his group of hunters by saying “boys armed with sticks”. Jack was confident in his hunters and believed that they could kill the beast. Therefore, Ralph’s insult made Jack angry. This can be seen from “his face was red” as red symbolises anger and hatred. Jack also accused of Ralph being a “coward himself”. However Ralph did not think the hunters were capable of killing the beast. This causes Jack’s friendly behaviour with Ralph to turn to one with enmity, and eventually Jack’s separation with Ralph. He is trying to be a teamplayer not like Jack who want’s to go adventure and kill things Ralph is protective and really smart. So If I was in Ralph situation then I would have not been able to prevent the deaths because Jack was way out of control. Even though there has been times where Ralph did not do what a leader should of done. There was times he was picking on piggy and time he was acting like himself. Although the difference between Jack and Ralph is that Ralph is not evil, cynical, or selfish he knows the difference between right and what’s wrong.
There are very few signs of anger between them. Immediately after Ralph is elected as leader, "Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with shy liking" This shows that they can still be friends even though one of them failed at being elected leader. As they explore later in the chapter, they can agree with each other without any signs of awkwardness.
Which is why he had gotten treated the way he did by Jack and the choir. The author writes, “ Jack made a rush and stabbed Ralph’s chest with his spear.” (Golding 177.) Even though Ralph is technically chief, Jack will stop at nothing to become chief. Ralph had been teasing Jack for being a thief, and that had pushed Jack over the edge, causing him to lunge towards Ralph. Jack does not have a high tolerance for Ralph’s actions, and Ralph obviously has a high tolerance for pain. William Golding states, “ ‘The chief and Roger.. They hate you, Ralph. They are going to do you.’ ‘They are going to hunt you tomorrow.’ ‘... Roger sharpened a stick at both ends.’ ” (188) As you, the reader, can probably tell, Jack certainly does not like Ralph. He only likes the faction that obeys and follows him. Those who do not obey Jack, he wants to kill. In the “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, Golding had described Jack in many different ways. In the book, the author proves Jack is an arrogant tyrant who is revealing an exaggerated sense of his own importance or abilities. Jack has a desire for power and uses violence against others. Many boys were evacuated on an aircraft with a detachable passenger tube. They were flying over tropical seas via Gibraltar and Addis Ababa when the tube was released and crashed-landed in the jungle of an island. His concern for the individuals in the group is pertinent from the beginning: he conveys to Jack the necessity of shelters “as a sort of [home]”, upon noticing the distress of the younger children (pg. 58). It is seen that Ralph’s problems are not his own; he assumes the role of leader to bring orderly forces of civilization to all. By approaching circumstances with logistics rather than emotion, Ralph does not lose sight of himself in the face of adversity. Despite this, he is later forced to act irrationally in order to preserve his status. When confronted with the evidence of the beast, Ralph is hesitant to hunt it; he is only manipulated into doing so when Jack “[sneers]” and questions him if he is “frightened” (pg. 100). However, Ralph does not respond out of his spite or self-pride as he understands that he must retain his status among the boys. If he does not remain chief, Jack will secure the position, bearing the notion that there will always be individuals working against altruism for their own benefit. Jack was also at play in all this not just Ralph. Jack was an arrogant boy, but also tried to be civil and keep everything together, hunt, and, survive in the beginning. But then realized that getting saved might not be an opportunity for them. For example Jack split up his choir and hunted. Also kept the fire going but then left the fire unattended to go catch a pig with all of the group, Jack fought with Ralph because he was the leader and Jack wasn't. Then Ralph was “telling everyone what to do”. He was trying to keep everything together. Jack thought he should have been leader, so Jack left the group and started his own tribe.
Upon the arrival of the boys to the island Jack immediately found himself in the center of a power struggle. Although the conflict was brief, there was still a very obvious confrontation between Jack and Ralph. Once the boys had assembled themselves there was an election to see who was to be chief. Despite the fact that Ralph was voted leader, the desire to be in command never left Jack. Jack already had some leadership skills, being head choirboy at his old school, and he continuously challenged Ralph. The greatest source of conflict between Jack and Ralph was the debate over the necessity of maintaining a fire. Ralph felt that it was necessary to keep it burning at all times while Jack believed that hunting pigs and getting meat was much more essential.
