Coya Hall African American Experience in U.S GHS 210 OL 5/21/2014 Professor: Term Paper: Jessie Jackson Jesse Jackson is a famous Civil Rights leader, he’s often considered to be one of the greatest. His believe is that African Americans should have more political power. Jackson fought for the power by being the second African American to run for President. He was the first African-American to be a candidate in a presidential election. During the course of the Civil Rights Movement he was known as the man that took action with what was given to him. Jesse Jackson was born Jesse Louis Burns in 1941 in Greenville, South Carolina. He was born to the parents of Helen Burns and Noah Robinson. His mother remarried two years later to a man named Charles Jackson. Jackson graduated from Sterling High School and received a football scholarship to the University of Illinois. During his first year, he became displeased with the treatment on the university grounds and on the field. He was told that because he was a black he could not expect to play quarterback. Less than a year later, Jesse decided to finish his college years in the south, then transfer to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College in North Carolina. Jackson initially became involved in the Civil Rights movement when he was a student at North Carolina A&T. He also joined the Greensboro chapter of the Council on Racial Equality (CORE), a party that had ran early sit-ins to protest segregated lunch counters. In early 1963 Jackson planned various marches, sit-ins, and mass arrests to push for the desegregation of local restaurants and theaters. His management in these events earned him acknowledgment within the regional movement. Jesse Jackson has run for president, founded the Wall Street Project, and has been a prominent figure in international diplomacy. In 2000, along with his son, he published It's About the Money!: How You Can Get Out of Debt, Build Wealth, and Achieve Your Financial Dreams! The book is a guide for financial independence and security. Although Jackson was viewed by some as the potential successor to Martin Luther King he has never quite gained the full support of all elements of the black community. However, Jesse Jackson has become a prominent spokesman for Americans forgotten by the power brokers of the political process, especially blacks. He will be remembered from the Movement as a influential voice that forced action while others talked of it.
