Virus, Infection, and Pathogens As you begin this course, it is important for you to develop an understanding of a few key terms. These key terms are virus, infection, pathogen, and blood borne pathogen. A thorough understanding of these terms will help you better understand the concepts in subsequent sections of the course.
The word virus is derived from the Latin word meaning “poison, slimy liquid, or poison juice. ” Viruses are very small infectious (pathogenic) particles that cannot be seen with an ordinary lighted microscope. The virus is encapsulated with protein, and is unable to multiply unless it is living inside the cells of a living host. Infectious Disease VS Contagious Disease
Communicable diseases spread from one person to another via airborne viruses or bacteria, but also through blood or other body fluids. These diseases can be classified as infectious diseases, contagious diseases, or they can be classified as infectious and contagious.
An infectious disease is caused by pathogenic bacteria or viruses that enter the body and replicate to the point of disrupting the normal state of the body. Infectious diseases can be transmitted from person to person in one of two ways. The first is through casual contact and the second is through the exchange of blood or body fluids from an infected individual to that of a non-infected individual. AIDS, Hepatitis B, herpes, measles, and mumps are infectious diseases.
Contagious diseases cause infection and are communicable (transmitted) by casual contact. Examples of communicable diseases include: chicken pox, the common cold, measles, and tuberculosis. Remember that not all infectious diseases are contagious, because not all of them can be spread through casual contact. Review the table below as it highlights some common diseases and indicates whether they are an infectious disease, contagious disease, or both.
