It has been estimated over billions of dollars in damage to home owners, business owners, and cause numerus of deaths. The mass destruction that Ike caused had people coming up ways to prevent or lessen the effects if a storm like this would ever occur in the future. Dr. William Merrell, current study of interest is Ocean Physics, researching the sustainability, disaster, and recovery for a possible storm surge that Hurricanes produces, researched that the Dutch has proven will protect from flooding it will do the same for us. The storm surge team recommends is to build a larger and stronger barrier gates at the mouth of Galveston Bay and extend the seawall on both sides in Galveston Island that will protect the coastal counties from flooding. By building the larger storm surge gates will protect Galveston Bay from massive amounts of surge water entering the bay and will protect coastal communities that are up around the bay from flooding as it occurred during Hurricane …show more content…

SSPEED proposed to move the barrier gates up to the mouth of Houston ship channel to protect the chemical refineries and build levees to run along the side of highway 146. If the project plan is to be build this way, this will leave the low-lying communities and home and business owner that are on the east side of highway 146 are guaranteed to flood, rather than being built at mouth of Galveston Bay where it will protect both regions. If SSPEED plan happens and another hurricane or stronger makes land fall again as Ike did, as the storm surge water rises and will be blocked by the flood gates at the ship channel. The water will need to find somewhere else to run off to, the only place for it to go is to start flooding the unprotected areas of the coastal communities. This will cause a mass destructions and death to businesses and home owners. SSPEED project is not considering the lives of people they are putting at a greater risk for danger. Ike Dike plan is design to protect all area of the Houston and Galveston region and not just parts of the Houston region
