Even though he is not one of the lead characters in the series, Haymitch Abernathy plays a huge role in the development of the entire plot in The Hunger Games. He plays a drunk man who is practically hated by the surrounding town. He once won The Hunger Games and now serves as a mentor for future tributes. Most mentors are known for being really stern and tough or very empathetic with tributes because they once knew what it was like to be in the games. Instead, Haymitch is a pathetic drunk who has no respect for anything. What makes him so influential is astounding, though. Haymitch goes through an almost complete attitude change when he finds out that his next set of tributes, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, are fighters. He had once been the guy that would make sure that the tributes got out alive, but he became the man behind the whole plan to set free all of the people. Without Haymitch, the tributes would not have been able to escape the second Hunger Games. Escaping the second Hunger Games set in motion a rebellion that the entire ending of the series was centered around. He helps organize the escape and also helps organize further plans to aid in the success of being set free from The Capitol. Later in the story, the reader discovers that Haymitch had been planning this rebellion for so long. He, amongst others, had lived their entire lives in what was practically slavery and thanks to Haymitch, everyone was able to live free. Haymitch Abernathy is a very influential character in The hunger Games because he is the foundation of the story. He is able to contribute not only to the winnings of Katniss and Peeta, but the overthrow of an entire government. He alone had the power in the book to successfully fulfill the plot.
