Gender therapy is for people of the transgender spectrum. Some of the transgender spectrum includes FTM (Female to Male), MTF (Male to Female), and non-binary (not relating to either gender). Transgender people use gender therapy to help with emotional, social, and/or psychological problems relating to their gender. Often times, transgender people use this as a safe place, whether that be because of non-accepting family members or possibly society as a whole.
Gender therapy helps transgender people out with their emotions. The transgender population is rather vulnerable. The average life expectancy of a transgender person is about 30-32 years, compared to the average of 71 years for cisgender people (Murphy, 2012). This is because many …show more content…

Some social issues a transgender person could be dealing with include harassment, violence, isolation, and discrimination. A major issue with society’s view on the transgender population is that people believe it to be a mental illness. This is called transphobia, which is the dislike of transgender people. A wat gender therapy helps with social problems within the trans community is that they show them that they’re humans just like everyone else. They provide safe spaces for transgender people to go to, including support groups. In these support groups, people can make friends with other trans people and listen to other people’s transition stories. Transgender people experience something called “Gender Dysphoria.” Gender dysphoria is the feeling that one’s emotional and psychological identity is opposite of their biological sex. Gender dysphoria can come in many sizes. Some people have very little dysphoria, while some have a lot, but all trans people have gender dysphoria. To treat gender dysphoria, one must first go to a gender therapist to be diagnosed with it. After that, they may be able to be prescribed a hormone that would help them transition into the gender that identify with. Alongside the hormone treatment, a gender therapists can also recommend surgeries to help with the dysphoria. These two surgeries are top surgery and bottom surgery. They allow the transgender person to get the body parts of their identified gender.
Gender therapy is slightly different based on which part of the transgender spectrum a person is a part of. If you’re FTM, you’d get a different end result than someone who is MTF. They both get treated the same way, but they have two separate goals. One is to help transition a female into the man they were supposed to be, and the other vice versa. This involves taking different actions to get the end
