Essay On Fossil Fuels

903 Words2 Pages

Fossil fuels are “highly combustible substances formed from the remains of organisms from geologic ages” (327, Withgott, Laposata). When it comes to fossil fuels there are three major types: coal, natural gas, and oil (328, Withgott, Laposata). With fossil fuels you need to know how they are formed, where deposits are, how to extract the resources, and finally how society uses them. Knowing these things will give people a better understanding on the impact of fossil fuels.
Fossil fuels provide most of the energy that people buy, sell, and use in the economy because the fossil fuel content makes it easy to ship, store, and burn. Throughout the years the use of fossil fuels has risen and at this point in time it is at its highest ever. With fossil fuels being nonrenewable, once depleted it can’t be replaced and it would take a thousand years for the earth to generate the organic matter to produce a single days’ worth of fossil fuels for the society. Basically, fossil fuels are being used at an enormous rate that there will be no fossil fuels in just decades to centuries.
Fossil fuels are obtained by obtaining organic materials which are extracted from the ground. “Coal is the world’s most abundant fossil fuel, and it provides 27% of our global energy consumption” (329, Withgott, Laposata). Coal can be found in the ground and the only way to remove it is to mine for it, no matter if it deep underground or near the surface. There are different methods used when extracting coal. For coal deposits that are near the surface you use strip mining and for coal deposits that are deep underground you use subsurface mining (329, Withgott, Laposata). When it comes to obtaining both oil and gas, once the deposit is found the company usually w...

Fossil fuels are not really a sustainable long-term solution even though we will have these fossil fuels for decades and centuries to come. With fossil fuels comes health, environmental, political, and socioeconomic consequences (343, Withgott, Laposata). The issues that come with fossil fuels are making politicians, scientists, and business people to move to more renewable resources. Transitioning to renewable energy sources will help prolong the availability of fossil fuels (343, Withgott, Laposata). All this can happen to make fossil fuels last longer by conserving more energy, through lifestyle that lowers energy use, and through technological advances to improve efficiency (343, Withgott, Laposata).
