When it comes to fossil fuels there are three major types: coal, natural gas, and oil (328, Withgott, Laposata). With fossil fuels you need to know how they are formed, where deposits are, how to extract the resources, and finally how society uses them. Knowing these things will give people a better understanding on the impact of fossil fuels.
Fossil fuels provide most of the energy that people buy, sell, and use in the economy because the fossil fuel content makes it easy to ship, store, and burn. Throughout the years the use of fossil fuels has risen and at this point in time it is at its highest ever. With fossil fuels being nonrenewable, once depleted it can’t be replaced and it would take a thousand years for the earth to generate the organic matter to produce a single days’ worth of fossil fuels for the society. Basically, fossil fuels are being used at an enormous rate that there will be no fossil fuels in just decades to centuries.

The issues that come with fossil fuels are making politicians, scientists, and business people to move to more renewable resources. Transitioning to renewable energy sources will help prolong the availability of fossil fuels (343, Withgott, Laposata). All this can happen to make fossil fuels last longer by conserving more energy, through lifestyle that lowers energy use, and through technological advances to improve efficiency (343, Withgott, Laposata).

Scientists and citizens report detrimental side effects of hydraulic drilling. New York and Vermont have banned fracking statewide. Maryland has set a two year moratorium on fracking, so that more research can be done to show the impacts of fracking on the environment. Nationwide, many other cities and counties have banned fracking as well. All states should look into finding alternative sources of energy, instead of using devastating practices like fracking to extract non-renewable resources.

What is Hydraulic Fracturing or as some refer to as Fracking? Hydraulic Fracturing or Fracking is a method of mining. The process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at high pressure in order to crack shale rocks and release trapped natural gas from the ground. Fracking was first used in 1947, at the Hugoton field in southwestern Kansas. Stanolind Oil (AMOCO) was the company that conducted the experimental fracking method. Floyd Farris, who works for AMOCO, is the person who preformed studies of the pressure of injecting water and certain chemicals into oil and gas wells; the process of fracking was introduced. Fracking can produce a lot of energy, but it also has the potential to harm the environment. In today’s world humans are consuming massive amounts of fossil fuels. The top five oil consuming countries in the world are the usual suspects. These include the United States, China, Japan, India and Russia. Canada comes in at number 10 with a daily consumption of 2,287 thousand barrels per day. There are three major types of fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas. These resources were formed during the Carboniferous Period 360-286 million years ago. During this time earth was covered in swamps with large amounts of plants and waters filled with algae. When these plants and trees began to die they would form layers of peat. Hundreds and thousands of years would pass adding sand and other materials on top of the peat. This formed the sedimentary rocks we know today. As the thousands of years turned into millions of years the water of the peat layer was pushed out of the peat until the layer of diatoms turned into coal, oil or natural gas (CEC, 2013). Canada has oil industry throughout the country and currently 12 out of 13 provinces are active in the oil industry. Natural gas production is occurring in British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, and New Brunswick.
