Poverty: Is there an Answer
John F. Kennedy once said, “The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty, and all forms of human life.” This quote shows that we can solve cases of poverty, like the one in “Flavio’s Home” by Gordon Parks. Flavio is a youthful boy who is living in severe poverty, in the unsanitary slums of Rio de Janeiro. Flavio had many roles to play; he had to take care of the younger children and give them water and food while his parents were at work. There is an answer to solving poverty in Brazil. The Brazilian president created the Bolsa Familia program; not only can they stop poverty rates in Brazil, but they can develop similar programs like America.
Flavio and his family were facing severe poverty. Even the doctors there knew that they couldn't have helped everyone in Rio de Janeiro …show more content…

The Bolsa Familia program is an innovative program that provides a small monthly allowance to families who keep their children in school and vaccinated (Margolis). Now Brazil is helping out some 200 million poor and Brazil is now receiving cash transfers from dozens of countries (Margolis). Brazil is paying for the program by pocketing from the rich. Thanks to their president, Lula da Silva, for investing in services and benefits for the poor because this is what has made Brazil a success story according to Yale Global. Brazil shows the improvements they have made toward poverty from 1961 to now,because of president Lula. He helped Brazil become the eighth largest economy, and research shows that more than 20 million people rose out of poverty because of the Bolsa Familia program. Some of the changes would have helped Flavio and his family with financial aid, and the kids would have been able to go to school if they had the Bolsa Familia program then.
