The advent of technology is perhaps the most important in the history of the world, given that it has transformed the manner in which people interact. Technology can be defined as the collection of skills, techniques, methods along with processes that are used to produce goods and services, or in the fulfillment of products and services. Some of the most common technologies that the contemporary world humans use include the Internet and mobile devices. A Study conducted by Andrews et al (2015), has found that the average person spends about 5 hours a day on their cell phone.

Hence, it might be perceived that cell phones have improved the communication between people. As such, people separated by geographic regions no longer need to communicate using crude methods such as smoke and human messengers. Nonetheless, as Neves (2013) revealed, the past communication methods promoted the prevalence of face-to-face communication, which, in turn, assisted in creating a better social cohesion. In addition, if a need arose, people would travel long distances to have physical contact with others. Unfortunately, such an outcome is no longer a priority. As a result of cell phones, people are downplaying the need for physical contact or interaction. Thus, they prefer making calls to communicate or solve a particular problem. Indeed, as Zilberstein (2015) revealed, people are even solving a breakdown in their relationships through cell phone calls. However, the problem is that when talking on cell phones, a social connection is not created. Smart phones, tablets, computers and televisions are a staple in most common households today. As technology becomes smarter, it is noticeable that people are becoming increasingly lazier. According to a survey conducted by the Department of Labor in 2012, watching TV was the leisure activity that occupied the most time, about 2.8 hours a day (“American Time Use Survey Summary”). This means people are spending more time in front of their televisions than they are any other activities in their free time. Through logic and reasoning, Sherry states, “But what do we have, now that we have what we say we want, now that we have what technology makes easy?”(Turkle). Face to face conversations are now mundane because of the accessibility to interact at our fingertips, at free will through text, phone calls and social media. Belonging, the very essence of a relationship has now become trivial.
Since the Internet has emerged from society, access to information has been made readily available for anyone to discover. The Internet connects us to the world everyday, whether at work or at home. It helps us communicate with others; via email, social networking, or blogging. With the absents of the Internet, our society would be missing out on a vast amount of knowledge. Why was the message that was sent to me in all caps? Is that a way of showing anger? Many get emails or texts or any forms of messages through electronic communication and have no idea what the message is saying or how their tone of voice is. Many have kids who just started using communication or haven’t started at all, and are wondering what to teach their kids about communication. The best solution to this problem is to teach using face to face communication. In the old days, talking face to face was the way to go. They would walk or drive somewhere and meet up just to have a conversation. Now a day we rely on electronics. Even though sending emails is easy, talking face to face helps understand people in a more formal manner. Are these digital connections as meaningful as the old fashioned face-to-face kind?

Daily life with technology is also another huge issue in society. According to a survey taken in January 2013, people feel their work productivity has dropped 8% in the last year. They also felt that their relationships with their family at home dropped 4% in the past year. The opinions vary, but they are needed to show how technology is affecting different people.

Phones have been around way before I was born in 1996, but throughout the years, they have developed a phone called a “smart phone”. The smart phone has all kinds of new things that we can use to socialize with our peers. On these new phones, we can connect with our friends or family on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Technology has also developed Skype, a place you can talk with people on the computer with instant voice and video for hours.
