Handsome and brainy people would be popular in these days and age. However, Kurt Vonnegut , in his dystopia tale , “Harrison Bergeron” reveals that they will be considered as an abnormal person and wear handicapper or mask due to so-called “equality”. The idea of equality in this story is defined by the government who tries to create a total equality society in every way. In other words, all human-being is not only mentally but also physically equal to each other in order to ensure the message that nobody is better than another. Therefore, “normal” people with clumsy and ugliness would be regarding as the standard or model of “abnormal” people . The idea of total equality in this story is wrong, it is a forced equal society created by the government but not an equality world.
In the story complete equality is the goal for citizens,but the concept of equality created by government is wrong. They achieve physical and mental equality among citizens by abuses them.
The talent must wear mental handicap radio in their ear so some sharp noise form the transmitter can hinder their ability to think, the beautiful like ballerinas must wear hideous masks to hide their pulchritude and the strong and elegant must wear weights around their necks at day in and day out. Equality is the equal status,rights, opportunities, and responsaibilities for all the members of a society,group ,or family.It is not only refers to everyone have to treat as the same,but also exclude the inborn and classification difference so as to stop discriminate others .For example, the most significant type of equality is equality before the law. Ultimately, the discrepancy of inborn cannot be changed in reality ,however, the thought of equality and social system can be changed.It is not state that equality is not important ,but the idea and way of complete equality in this tale are wrong .It is necessary to defend the rights and interests of inborn weak people and the risk of suffered exploitation and oppression.In fact,the purpose of equality is to make sure everyone can treat good , not taking the advantage of high class people, but make sure they have the opportunities to become traet as same and enjoy their life.Vonnegut wrote a horrible dystopia tale to that if citizens fail to appreciate their uniqueness and talents,it will lead to our decline in society.
