Using a language to communicate is one of the main forms of connecting and conversing with other humans. Every human speaks a language and every language is unique. Languages are so unique that the ways in which some of their words are sounded and pronounced vary compared to other languages. However some of the words of one language may have been borrowed from the words of another language. As Bucholtz, M.(2000) states “English will continue to shape the youth styles of other cultures” and “the process of cultural and linguistic borrowing moves in [two] directions…Asia [is] already having a significant impact on American youth, who regularly encounter mediated forms of international youth culture in music, film, and fashion ” p 280-283. This is why we have some similarities between different languages.
English is one of the main languages spoken around the world today. Most countries will require you to know some English In order for you to be able to communicate. Even though English is one of the main languages spoken around the world, there are variations in speech from country to country. For example there is American English, British English and Australian English. Although the main language spoken in all three countries is English, they each pronounce some words differently. According to Allan & Burridge, (2006) the style of our language can vary according to “who we are and whom we are communicating with; whether we are speaking or writing; where we are and when the utterance takes place; what we are talking about; and how we feel about the whole situation” p 75. ...er would pronounce the [r] sound at the end of a word. Additionally the 32-year-old Filipino was not as fluent in her speech as the other speakers. Whilst speaking, quite often she would stutter which could be as a result of not knowing English well enough and having it as a second language. More so this meant that she was more likely to use slang words in her speech, as she would be learning from those around her. In comparison to the other speakers, the second speaker who is also much older than the other speakers would speak in a formal tone because of his position in politics, which means he did not use any slang. Finally based on the changes in the variations of speech from each of the different speakers it can be concluded that the study proves that language is forever changing and other cultures and countries influence the way in which language is changing.
