Ender’s Game is a futuristic novel written by Orson Scott Card, an American writer, in 1977. The book tells the story of Ender Wiggin, a 6 year old child genius, third child of John Paul and Theresa Wiggin. Starting off as a shy and lonely kid, Ender displays none of the traits of a leader, let alone a good leader. Ender is unaware that he is about to be chosen to become a Commander in a war the Human race is engaged to with an Alien Race, called the Formics. Ender progresses through the book from a very smart, yet introverted character, to a great leader and sympathetic person. By the end of the book, he changes drastically and matures, becoming a true leader and role model to all of his peers. After being transferred to Commanders school, Ender, going through many simulations of real battles, becomes better at strategizing: “The better Ender knew them, the faster he could deploy them, the better he could use them” (Card 275). After going through three weeks of practicing, Ender gets to know his teammates really well and together, Ender and his team are able to win the war. After winning the simulation, Ender is horrified when he realizes that the battle wasn’t a simulation at all. Graff, Ender’s Superior, informs him then that the battle has destroyed an entire Alien race and their planet. Upon learning this fact Ender is appalled that he had just killed an entire species, proclaiming “I didn’t want to kill them all. I didn’t want to kill anybody! I’m not a killer” (Card 297)! At this point Ender, is disgusted that he had caused a genocide and has been deceived, used as a killing machine without his knowledge.
