How can someone be classified as a leader? What makes them a good leader? What steps did they take to become a leader? How can I take those same steps to be considered a leader? These are questions that come to mind when I am asked, “What type of leader do I want to be?” Many people may consider themselves leaders, but not all of them are good leaders. There is a good saying that you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink, which shows everyone may not be an effective leader, as they should. Dictionary.com’s top definition for the word leader is a “person or thing that leads.” This is a very broad definition since it shows no inclination of what is being led or how it is being lead. There are four types of leaders, “Adaptive, Transformational, Transactional, and Situational. I feel being an Adaptive leader would be the best for myself, and for my future career in the military/civilian world. Being an OBGYN is a very stressful job since babies can come at any moment in time, and with that I will have to be able to adjust. With being an OBGYN in the military, I would have to be very adaptive in handling emergencies or crisis situations. For example, if I am dealing with a patient whose “water broke,” but she’s not dilating enough, then I would have to deal with the risk of the baby not having enough oxygen, therefore an emergency cesarean section will have to happen. Not only will I have to adjust accordingly, but I would also have to communicate effectively to the patient and nursing staff the make sure they are on the same page as me to effectively get the procedure done.
