Dining Etiquette: In India, Table manners are somewhat formal, and often depend on the religious beliefs of various groups. If you attend dinner at someone’s house one has to remove his/her shoes before entering. If one is invited to an Indian’s house for dinner it is not necessary to bring a gift, though it will not be turned down. Avoid giving white flowers, as they are used at funerals. Yellow, green, and red are lucky colors so try to give gift wrap in these colors (Keay, 2013).
Diet: Many Indian religions have strict dietary restrictions (Keay, 2013). For example, Hindus do not eat beef, Muslims do not eat pork or drink alcohol, and Sikhs do not eat beef. Similarly, you should not give Hindu’s gifts made of leather, and do not give Muslims gifts of alcoholic beverages. Commonly served dishes include lamb, chicken, and fish, as well as many vegetarian meals. Leave a small amount of food after eating, signifies that one is full, while finishing all your food indicates that one is still hungry. These have to be understood during formal/informal meetings with Indian clients.
Business: In India, titles are very important so it is best to address people using their professional title or by Mr., Mrs., or Miss, followed by their last name. Business cards are very often handed out, usually after the initial handshake or meeting. Indians are not too punctual but one has to reach in time for avoiding any complexity (Malika, 2007).Relationships within business is very important in India, as Indians prefer to do business with people they know. Therefore, most business meetings begin with small talk and business is discussed much later (Malika, 2007). Strength of India includes cheap labour force, abundance of natural resources, high growth rate etcetera.
Weakness includes poverty, corruption, red tapism, bureaucracy, unemployment, poor infrastructure etcetera.
An opportunity includes easy entry modes, huge population, and high domestic demand.
Threats include high fiscal deficit, recession, and volatility of oil prices.
Considering all these factors and SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis along with the economical aspects of India as discussed in starting, one can think of investing/expanding in India.
