How to protect yourself from confirmation bias. Something we can’t avoid is news. We see it and hear it every day. Whether it’s from a family member or you catch a glimpse on some guy’s phone on the train, we all see it. However most of us only stick to one news source, which is fine but as it may be, we end up catching an ancient virus you might not have heard of. Confirmation bias, only sticking to one news source and listening to only what you want to hear. This is part of the fixed mindset and can prevent you from accepting other people’s opinions. Despite that this might be something an abundant of you might want to avoid and there are ways to protect yourself from this virus that has infected many people around the world. To begin, start listening to other sources. Listening to other people’s thoughts and opinions can give you more insight on issues at hand. Take in what others think and it could change your opinion on major issues. Although it is good to listen to new information, if you do listen to things that could offend you, you can stop listening if you want. Per, JM Ojarez, journalist for Harvard Business Review(HBR.org) stated, “Gather the data you would need to defend this opposite view and compare it with the data used to support your original decision.” This will give you more information and both sides of the argument to make a full decision instead of obtaining one pint-sized piece of the larger picture. Think of it like a puzzle, you have an abundance of pieces with a legion of parts to form one vast picture. If you have one piece and do not compare it with another piece and examine if it will fit, you won’t have a full picture. Widen your mind to accepting the other pieces and then once you have finished the puzzle, you should make your decision on the full
