Desmond tutu states: “It is by standing up for the rights of girls and women that we truly measure up as men.” However, it is the other way around in Afghanistan where women face challenges from both their family and society, often oppressed and subjugated to violence and other extreme physical and sexual abuse. And very little has been done by government agencies to address and solve the challenges Afghan women face.
The common challenges Afghan women face are illiteracy, poverty, domestic violence, poor health care, economic and political inequality. The above mentioned challenges are more severe in remote and rural parts of the country where government has little or no coverage at all, and some parts are under Taliban’s rule where life is a living hell for women.
Among the challenges Afghan women face, violence is the most common which has been a national concern in recent years. They have been subject to numerous forms of violence such as torture, burning, cutting body parts, acid-throwing and that's just the tip of the iceberg because most of the violence remains unheard for the fear of more violence. According to WHO’s 2015 data the average life expectancy of an Afghan woman is 62 years. Every year many Afghan women die or lose their child because of pregnancy complications or die while giving birth inside their homes without proper surgical tools by untrained hands, as a result maternal mortality is at its highest. In order to reduce issues related to health among Afghan women more clinics and health centers need be established in remote parts of the country, in places where women have less access to proper health care, and these issues should be included in school curriculum so that students understand these challenges at a younger age, and live a healthy life in the
