The United States Department of Education released a list of 85 colleges that are currently under federal investigation for mishandling sexaul assault cases. This means, around 85 colleges hid and buried the voices of many victims that wanted justice for being violated of a basic right. Campus rape or sexual assault is an under-reported crime with only 12% of cases being reported to law enforcements. According to Danielle Dirks in her article “Surveys Will Reveal the True Numbers of Sexual Assault Survivors on Campus”, in a 2009 study, 77% of college campuses documented zero reports of sexual assaults. In many cases, colleges rarely expel students that are accused of sexaul assault; only 10-25% of the students are permanently kicked out. Alexander Brodsky, a student at Yale law school said “When I reported violence to my school, I was told not to go to police. But I never would have told [the school] if I knew I was going to be forced into that option.” The constant indifferent attitude toward victims causes some individuals to keep quiet about being sexually assaulted. According to Eliza Gray’s article “Why Don’t Campus Rape Victims Go To the Police?”, the number one reason survivors don’t want to go to law enforcement is because they don’t want anyone to know what happened to them. Confidentiality is important when investigating these cases because victims are too ashamed and embarrassed that something like this can happen to them. In a 2007 study, “42% of the “physically forced” victims who did not report sexual assault to the police” was because they wanted to keep it a secret and bury the event (Gray).
