Public Breastfeeding: A Polarizing Issue in America

In America, breastfeeding has become a polarized issue; on one side people oppose this being done in public, and on the other side some argue that it is a natural part of life. Breastfeeding in America has become a big issue for a lot of people like my husband Chris. He believes that women should not be permitted to breastfeed in public. On the contrary, our mutual friend Talia believes it to an acceptable, and natural behavior to breastfeed while in public. Chris supports my breastfeeding our baby, however does not like it when I choose to feed her while we are in public. My husband thinks breastfeeding is something that needs to be done in private, and if a woman is in public when her child becomes hungry, then she should go to the bathroom or completely cover her breasts and baby. He stated, “Women should pump and bottle feed their kids while they are in public.” In addition to this he also believes women sexualized themselves, so it is “their own fault” for people to be uncomfortable with breastfeeding in public. Talia believes if a baby is hungry, they should be fed no matter where they are. She believes if a woman is feeding her child she should not have to cover herself. They both believe a woman should choose whether or not they want to breastfeed their child. In addition, they both believe that breastfeeding helps the mother and baby bond, and help prevent or cure postpartum depression. My husband says that not only is breastfeeding healthy, it is cheaper, and you do not have to spend your money on formula.
