“Only one man dares to stand up to Grendel’s fury,” (cover) and that man is Beowulf. The legend of Beowulf is a captivating story that will take you through a grand adventure between life and death. I think that the story of Beowulf should be read in the middle school years. Also, there is more to the book than meets the eye, which is very similar to Beowulf himself. “His eyes being poor, he determined to see not just as well as other people, but better than most. He did this by cultivating habits of quickness and concentration that enabled him to be truly seeing where others were only looking.” (p.20) I think the story of Beowulf is a perfect book for adolescent readers. It fits in well with the history that middle school kids are learning. It also teaches good morals about being good. “... His real strength lay in the balance of his person―which is, perhaps, another way of saying that he was strong because he was good, and good because he had the strength to accept things in him that were bad.” (p. 20) People could also read Beowulf for fun outside of schools. He killed seven of the king’s guards and then he killed ten nobles and Hrothgar barely escaped with his life. A hero named Beowulf heard of this threat and decided to try to help. Beowulf was no usual hero because he admitted that there was some bad in him. He came to help Hrothgar and ripped Grendel’s arm out of his socket.
