Anti-semitism has been around for a long time. So long that it dates back to the third century, and it’s still a problem today. Anti-semitism has started wars, created genocides and aided in countless unadulterated murders. One example of anti semitism happened just last month in Kansas City, KS, when a massacre happened at a Jewish community center. One of the first examples of Anti-Semitism started in the first century. The Catholic church stated that Jews were responsible for Jesus Christ being crucified. The Catholics then destroyed jewish temples and exiled them into different places. Doctrines were created stating numerous lies about the jews, exaggerating on everything from rituals with childrens blood, to worshiping the anti-christ and showing extreme hatred towards the roman church. The rituals were called blood libel. They were often burned at the stake for “performing” these rituals. In the twelfth century, the Almoravid dynasty, began killing jews in Paris if they refused to convert to christianity. Jews were often treated as outsiders and were often kicked out of towns, cities, villages and caravans. They were so hated in France that they would be kicked out of the city on a regular basis, but they would still always come back time after time. In the fourteenth century jews were accused of causing the black death, thus trying to kill millions of people. The inaccurately doctrines stated that this was happening because of the jews blasphemous and satanic practices. As punishment for this belief King Philip IV ordered the jews to give up all of their belongings except for the clothes on their backs. In the twenty first century there are still acts of anti-semitism going on today such as the jewish community center shooting that happened in Kansas City last month. The suspect that shot and killed three people was a member of the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) and he was a also a anti semitic. The Westboro Baptist church also targets jews while picketing outside of funerals and jewish meetings. Jews also still face opposition in Palestinian territories. In the end no matter what beliefs one has we are all of one race, the human race, and through school lectures and government anti-bullying campaigns the future is looking brighter than ever before towards a world without anti-semitism, but even though we may be the closest we have ever been to eradicating this ugly ignorance, we still have a long road to go.
Anti-Semitism is the hatred and discrimination of those with a Jewish heritage. It is generally connected to the Holocaust, but the book by Helmut Walser Smith, The Butcher’s Tale shows the rise of anti-Semitism from a grassroots effect. Smith uses newspapers, court orders, and written accounts to write the history and growth of anti-Semitism in a small German town. The book focuses on how anti-Semitism was spread by fear mongering, the conflict between classes, and also the role of the government.

While anti-Semitism is majorly highlighted in new testament, one of the most incriminating event, in the New Testament, attested to the Jews, is the Jewish peoples responsibility for Jesus killing; Judas, a Jew, betrayed Jesus, leading to his crucifixion, Pontius Pilot, also a Jew, was the direct cause of the crucifixion of Jesus, and various other Jewish leaders were held responsible (New International Version Mark 14:43-46, Acts 27).
Jews have been persecuted throughout all of history. A deep seated hatred has existed in many nations against them. Throughout history Jews could not find a resting place for long before they are thrown out of over 80 countries including England, France, Austria and Germany (Ungurean, 2015). Deicide is one of the reasons why Jews are hated. It is said that Jews are the responsible party for the killing of Jesus. The gospels describe Jews delivering Jesus to Roman authorities while demanding that he be crucified and his blood be on their children (Schiffman, n.d.). As a result Jews are held accountable for the death of Jesus and they are hated by many.

According to Merriam Webster Online Dictionary, anti-Semitism is defined as “hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group.” This is one of the major themes of Philip Roth’s fictional novel The Plot Against America. In his novel, Roth creates an alternate universe where Charles A. Lindbergh, Nazi sympathizer and friend of Hitler, was picked as the republican candidate and ends up winning the presidency over the democratic candidate, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Throughout the novel, Roth shows how this theoretical change in history could have affected both the outcome of the war and the future for Jews in America, all through the eyes of a young Philip Roth and his family.

Anti-Semitism history goes all the way back to the birth beginning of the the spread of Christianity. Its history is very interesting and deep rooted. Anti- Semitism would have never reached its height if it weren’t for Nazi propaganda. Without propaganda the Holocaust may have never happened. The worst part of Anti-Semitism was its effects. It killed millions of people. In conclusion Anti-Semitism was a terrible thought and should never be repeated in history again.
For more than two thousand years anti-Semitism has plagued the Jews, however, the term has only been around for about thirty years (Strack 594). Due to the hateful accusations and of those who did not understand their religion, Jews, as a scorned people, gradually became more exclusive and intolerant of other religions. Because of Judaism’s strict adherence to their own beliefs and unwillingness to consider any alternatives, Muslims and Christians have scorned and persecuted Jews.
For centuries, the world we live in has been filled with hatred towards different, race, ethnicity, religion and cultural differences. A very good example of this is Antisemitism, which is the hatred of the Jewish faith. This is believed to have started in Europe around the Middle Ages time frame. This intensified in Germany after World War 1 (1914-1918) where majority of Jewish minorities lived. Hitler who was the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi for short) hated the Jews and held them responsible for the humiliating loss of WW1 and wanted to get rid and eliminate the Jewish population in the Nazi controlled lands.
Judaism, the religion of the Israelites, and some modern day Jews is a cause for some of the Anti Semitic ideas. Biblically, the idea of monotheism was not really accepted and the Jews were clearly different in believing in one God. Not to mention they believe Yahweh or Jehovah is the one true God. The Egyptians didn’t like this. The Greeks didn’t and the Romans didn’t. I mean the Romans thought they were heretics and tried to make them change their beliefs. However they didn’t. This shows their strength and why people might hate or fear them.

Even if people do know this, can they answer where and why? Why do people often avoid learning about other people’s cultures and beliefs? According to Merriam-Webster online dictionary anti-Semitism is, “Hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group.” Anti-Semitism has existed in the world since the time of the ancient Roman Empire, and has been evident in events such as the Inquisition and Holocaust. It has been such a large topic of controversy that even William Shakespeare, a famous English poet, wrote a play called Merchant of Venice on the topic. If we know about anti-Semitism in the past then why do we not know about it in the present?
In Sartre's Anti-Semite and Jew, he makes reference to the notion that anti-Semitism arises not against individual Jews, but against the " idea of the Jew." That is to say that the Jew is recognized only as a member of a group associated with fear and disgust, not as an individual capable of being anything but the stereotype of the Jew. I agree with Sartre's theory as I have seen first hand the disgust associated with being Jewish. The Jew is judged not by his action or words but simply by the fact that he is a Jew, and the preconceived idea of what this means. As discussed in class, Jews have been used as scapegoats throughout history.

Beginning in ¬¬¬pre-Christian society people of the Jewish faith have been blamed and alienated from society. Anti-Semitism, or hostility or prejudice against Jews was a distorted belief that changed course over history. Although in pre-Nazi Germany anti-Semitism was apparent, Hitler used propaganda to change anti-Semitism from some people having prejudice towards Jews to eventually the dehumanization and genocide of Jewish people.
