The stories To Kill A Mockingbird, and The Scarlet Ibis may not be identical, but they are beautiful stories that send the message of being kind to everyone, and are suffused with symbolism. Doodle was a human being like everyone else, yet Brother was ashamed of him simply because he was different. Or exotic, like a scarlet ibis. On page 419 of The Scarlet Ibis it says, “...I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.” This clearly states that Brother was ashamed of Doodle.

Instead of Brother being comparable to Scout, I found little or no connection between them, but found more similarities between Brother and Jem. Brother and Jem are both ashamed of their siblings at some point. On page 61 of To Kill A Mockingbird it says, “When I joined them, as usual they said go away.” That was when Jem would exclude Scout because she was younger and because she was a girl. The more obvious connections between the boys are the fact that they are boys, and they are the eldest siblings. Scout and Doodle both have nicknames. Scout’s actual name is Jean Louise Finch, and Doodle’s actual name is William Armstrong. A scout is someone who goes out and finds information. Scout is a questioner and observer. Doodle was given his nickname since a name like William Armstrong didn’t quite click with someone who was small and frail. “Crawling backward made him look like a doodlebug so I began to call him Doodle, and in time even Mama and Daddy thought it was a better name than William Armstrong.” page 417 of The Scarlet
